How Disney, a new mayor and a secret ‘cabal’ gained power over Anaheim
Inside the 3,000-square-foot suite on the top floor of the Disneyland Hotel’s Fantasy Tower, Harry Sidhu beamed as he surveyed the small group of Anaheim business leaders, consultants and politicians celebrating their return to power. Results from a bruising election filled the big-screen television behind the future mayor that night as supporters sipped wine and laughed amid red, white and blue balloons and small American flags. “Anaheim’s future is going to be bright going forward from here,” Sidhu told the group in a video of the event reviewed by The Times. “We are open for business!” Cheers filled the Blue Sky Suite, decorated with Midcentury Modern furniture and vintage renderings of Tomorrowland. Optimism flowed through impromptu speeches by Sidhu and two victorious councilmen like the flood of big-business cash that drove their campaigns. Left unspoken amid the applause, however, was that this November 2018 night also heralded the return of a small, secretive group of … [Read more...] about How Disney, a new mayor and a secret ‘cabal’ gained power over Anaheim

In October 2019, Jordan Janz became the first person in the world to receive an experimental therapy for cystinosis, a rare genetic disease. The treatment was physically grueling. Doctors extracted blood stem cells from Janz’s bone marrow and genetically modified them in a lab. Meanwhile, he underwent chemotherapy to clear out the remaining faulty cells in his bone marrow before he got the newly modified ones. The chemo gave Janz sores in his mouth so painful that he couldn’t eat. He lost his head full of pale-blond hair. But Janz, then a 20-year-old from Alberta, Canada, had signed up for this because he knew that cystinosis was slowly killing him. The mutated gene behind this disease was causing toxic crystals of a molecule called cystine to build up everywhere in his body. He threw up constantly as a kid. Visible crystals accumulated in his eyes. And his kidneys were now failing. Cystinosis patients live, on average, to 28.5 years old . Fortunately, the experimental gene … [Read more...] about Side Effects May Include … A Completely New Hair Color?

Prosecutors seek 30 to 55-year sentence for Ghislaine Maxwell
Federal prosecutors say convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell should be sentenced to a minimum of 30 years and up to 55 years for her “instrumental role in the horrific sexual abuse of multiple young teenage girls," according to a sentencing memorandum. In the memorandum filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, prosecutors wrote Maxwell, a British socialite, enjoyed "a life of extraordinary luxury and privilege" while engaging in a "disturbing agreement" with financier Jeffrey Epstein . Maxwell, 60, was convicted in December of five federal sex trafficking charges related to her role in recruiting and grooming teenage girls to be sexually abused by Epstein, her close confidant. “Instead of showing even a hint of acceptance of responsibility, the defendant makes a desperate attempt to cast blame wherever else she can,” prosecutors said in the sentencing memo. Maxwell’s attempts to “cast aspersions on the Government for … [Read more...] about Prosecutors seek 30 to 55-year sentence for Ghislaine Maxwell

Six Years After Britain Voted For Brexit The Job Still Not Done: Farage
Six years to the day after Britain voted to leave the European Union the Brexit process is, at best, a work in progress and the risk remains of the UK drifting back into the EU’s orbit if action is not taken, Nigel Farage has warned. Britain’s establishment has refused to let the people of the United Kingdom enjoy any possible benefits of Brexit and there are several steps that must be taken to truly realise Britain’s departure from the European Union, ‘Mr Brexit’ Nigel Farage said. Identifying the “obstructionist… negative” permanent government — the Civil Service — as the Westminster swamp that is still to be drained and the tax-cutting moves the government could choose to make to ease the cost of living crisis now it is no longer bound by EU rules, the Brexit leader said the most important step now is to complete Brexit by withdrawing from the remaining pan-European bodies Britain remains inside. Particularly in Mr Farage’s crosshairs as he spoke on the sixth anniversary … [Read more...] about Six Years After Britain Voted For Brexit The Job Still Not Done: Farage
