Trumpsters Claim Dead Cows Are Proof of a Nefarious Plot to Starve Americans

June 25, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com

Republicans have seized on the deaths of thousands of cattle in a Kansas heat wave as the latest proof of a baseless conspiracy theory that saboteurs ranging from the mega-wealthy to the government are out to destroy the national food supply. That hoax has been circulating on the right for months, but received new energy after thousands of cattle in Kansas died in a June heatwave in which temperatures topped 104 degrees. A viral video that showed what appeared to be hundreds of dead cattle was cited by as proof that someone—the Biden administration, liberal billionaires, or an unnamed elite cabal—was behind the deaths. For ranchers, the cattles’ deaths were not mysterious. A spokeswoman for the Kansas Livestock Association told PBS that the cows died from “heat stress” after a sudden 20-degree temperature spike. Rather than accept that the cattle were killed by the heat—and the prospect that climate change will bring similar mass-death incidents—some Republicans became … [Read more...] about Trumpsters Claim Dead Cows Are Proof of a Nefarious Plot to Starve Americans

The Supreme Court prompts the question: Who gets rights in America?

June 25, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 Amy Martin was 14 years old when Roe v. Wade was decided, establishing a right to abortion that she took for granted for nearly five decades. Martin was 56 when the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in 2015, a right she took advantage of when she married her partner of 30 years last year. And when the court overturned that first decision on Friday, with Justice Clarence Thomas writing in his opinion that the court should next reexamine cases granting LGBTQ rights, Martin found herself seized with new terror that the second one could also fall. "What if gay marriage is the next thing?" said Martin, 63, who recently retired from her job at a Cleveland law office, and whose health-care benefits come from her wife's policy. "The fabric of our country and what it's been based on, it's fraying." As the implications of the court's abortion decision continued to … [Read more...] about The Supreme Court prompts the question: Who gets rights in America?

Gesiotto Gilbert: ‘I’m Ready to Fight for the Community that I Care About’

June 27, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

Trump-endorsed Republican candidate Madison Gesiotto Gilbert told Breitbart News that she’s “ready to fight” in Congress for the families in Ohio and the state’s freshly minted Thirteenth Congressional District. Gesiotto Gilbert, a small business owner and attorney — who was a national surrogate for the Trump campaign in 2016 and 2020 — told Breitbart News, “I’m ready to fight for the people I care about, I’m ready to fight for the community that I care about that I love where I grew up.” She is running in Ohio’s newly minted Thirteenth Congressional District after the redistricting process took a seat away from the Buckeye State. The former Trump national surrogate noted that the district now includes all of Summit County for the first time in over 50 years, saying that “the Akron area has been made whole.” When the district was created, it absorbed parts of all the congressional seats in the surrounding area, including the ones represented by Democrat Reps. Tim Ryan and … [Read more...] about Gesiotto Gilbert: ‘I’m Ready to Fight for the Community that I Care About’

How to save your garden plants during drought and heatwaves

June 22, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Prolonged droughts and heatwaves are expected to become more common in the coming decades, with parts of the U.S. already experiencing what scientists call a "megadrought." Droughts are periods of abnormally dry weather that persist for relatively long periods of time. Aside from the wider societal impacts, such as as potential damage to crops and water shortages, droughts can also have a devastating impact on garden plants. So how can you care for your garden during these dry and hot conditions? How does drought damage plants? Drought stress occurs when water loss through the leaves exceeds the plant's ability to pull in water through its roots, Lucy Bradley, a horticultural scientist at North Carolina State University Extension, told Newsweek . This interferes with several important processes including photosynthesis (the conversion of food to energy); transpiration (the movement of water through the plant and evaporation from certain parts, which helps to cool it); the … [Read more...] about How to save your garden plants during drought and heatwaves

Republican lawmakers in Wisconsin were set to meet in a session with Gov. Tony Evers over repealing the state's abortion ban. The legislators were poised to quickly adjourn, taking no action on the matter. Evers called the session to repeal the ban earlier this month, but Wisconsin GOP members said the move was no more than a political stunt. "Every single Wisconsinite should have the right to consult their family, their faith and their doctor to make a reproductive healthcare decision that is right for them. And every single Wisconsinite should be able to make that deeply personal decision without interference from politicians who don’t know anything about their life circumstances, values, or responsibilities," Evers said in a statement. Separation of Church and State Is Crumbling Before Our Eyes

June 23, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com

Bow your heads and say a prayer over the separation of church and state, may it rest in peace. Who knows, doing so may someday entitle you to a government subsidy. During a week in which much of our focus is on the public assault on our democratic values that took place on Jan. 6 —and just as a looming Supreme Court decision seems all-but-certain to strip away the federal guarantee of reproductive rights at any moment—that same court may have more stealthily put the dagger in another principle on which our nation was founded. In the case of Carson v. Makin , the court ruled that public funds intended to support the education of students for whom a public education option was not available must be made available to parents who wished to use them to pay for religious schools’ tuition. In so doing, the court’s conservative majority essentially ordered that taxpayer funds be used to support religious institutions. The decision is fraught with problems. In his dissent, … [Read more...] about Separation of Church and State Is Crumbling Before Our Eyes

Students save thousands by ditching pricey university halls to live in a van

June 22, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Two savvy students are saving thousands of pounds each year - as they have ditched university accommodation and moved into a converted van instead. Madison Wood, 23, and her fiancé, Pepijn Grijpink, 22, were paying a whopping £1,040 per month to live in a converted one-bed garage and they didn't like it. So they came up with a plan and bought a Ford Transit, rolled up their sleeves, and converted it into a cosy home for the pair to live in. Now they pay only £465 a month, which covers the cost of diesel, food and water - and they even have solar panels so they haven't been caught up in the energy crisis. The three of them are living their best life ( Image: @madsandpep / MERCURY PRESS) What do you think about the couple's mobile home? Let us know in the comments... Madison, from Shifnal, Shropshire, said: "I’ve always wanted to travel, settling in one place has never really been an option for me. Clarence Thomas wants SCOTUS to “correct the error” of legal gay marriage

June 24, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas argued in a Friday opinion that the nation's top judicial body should overrule a previous decision legalizing LGBTQ marriage nationwide and a former ruling that determined criminalizing sodomy is unconstitutional. Thomas issued a concurring opinion with the Supreme Court 's 5 to 4 decision overturning abortion rights as established by Roe v. Wade on Friday. The conservative justice, who was appointed by former Republican President George H.W. Bush , took aim at the Court's 2003 ruling in Lawrence v. Texas and its 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges . Lawrence established that criminal penalties for sodomy or private sexual acts between consenting adults are unconstitutional. That decision came down in a 6 to 3 ruling. Obergefell legalized same-sex marriage nationwide in a 5 to 4 decision. Thomas, who joined the court in 1991, dissented in both the 2003 and 2015 Supreme Court decisions. In his Friday concurring … [Read more...] about Clarence Thomas wants SCOTUS to “correct the error” of legal gay marriage
