Laurence Tribe, a Harvard professor of constitutional law, accused the conservative Supreme Court majority of "misleadingly" utilizing his quotes in its controversial Friday decision to overturn Roe v. Wade . Conservative Associate Justice Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization . The ruling in that case brought an end to nearly five decades of Supreme Court precedent —overturning the landmark 1973 Roe decision and bringing an end to woman's constitutionally protected right to an abortion. "Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences," Alito argued in his opinion. Four of the top court's justices concurred with Alito's opinion , while Chief Justice John Roberts concurred with upholding the 15-week abortion ban of Dobbs , but took issue with fully overturning Roe . The Court's three liberal justices together issued a dissenting … [Read more...] about Supreme Court “misleadingly quotes me” in abortion ruling: Law professor

US Abortion Ruling: Police at Arizona Capitol Fire Tear Gas, Disperse Protesters
Police fired tear gas to disperse anti-abortion demonstrators from outside the Arizona Capitol Friday night, forcing lawmakers to huddle briefly in a basement inside the building as they rushed to complete their 2022 session. Thousands of protesters had gathered earlier on the Capitol grounds in Phoenix, divided into groups both supporting and condemning the US Supreme Courts decision overturning Roe v. Wade. SWAT team members with the Department of Public Safety fired tear gas from second floor of the old Capitol building to disperse protesters in the mall between the current House and Senate buildings. KPHO-TV reported the officers opened fire when several anti-abortion protesters started banging on glass doors of the Senate building. Authorities said there were no injuries or arrests. The incident sent Senate lawmakers into the basement for about 20 minutes, said Democratic Sen. Martin Quezada. Stinging tear gas wafted through the building afterward, forcing the Senate to … [Read more...] about US Abortion Ruling: Police at Arizona Capitol Fire Tear Gas, Disperse Protesters
Nolte: Abortion, Gun Rulings Are Civil Rights Victories That Will Save Lives
Overturning Roe v. Wade and declaring New York’s fascist conceal carry law unconstitutional are not only progress for the cause of human and civil rights–they will also save countless innocent lives. It need not be pointed out how this week’s 5-4 Supreme Court decision concerning Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization finally ended the moral and legal atrocity of Roe v. Wade or how it will save lives. The slaughter of innocent, unborn babies will end in any number of states, come under heavy restrictions in others, and likely save millions of lives. Unfortunately, this mass butchering will likely continue in the demonic blue states. Out of defiance, it might even increase. Overall, though, the infanticide numbers will almost certainly decrease. And those numbers are almost too horrific to comprehend. Since Roe became the law of the land in 1973, 63 million innocent babies have been slaughtered. Sixty-three million lives were snuffed out, almost all for … [Read more...] about Nolte: Abortion, Gun Rulings Are Civil Rights Victories That Will Save Lives
Grisham: Thomas Said There Are No Reliable Precedents, Leaving Abortion Laws to Legislature Is Call ‘to Save the Democracy’
On Friday’s broadcast of CNN’s “Don Lemon Tonight,” New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) claimed that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas ruled that “there are no precedents that you can rely on,” and that the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade and leaving the decisions on abortion laws to the legislature “is now a call to action to save the democracy. And you think the insurrection would be enough, but I think this is the tipping point today.” Grisham said, “This is not how you build a democracy. This is how you rip it apart. And for many women and their families, to have equal protections under the law and basically having Justice Thomas declare that everything now is — can be revisited, that there are no precedents that you can rely on, I think is a message to voters that this is not just a single issue anymore, not even a moral debate. The democracy, in fact, by virtue of the politicization of this and related issues is now a call to action to save the democracy. … [Read more...] about Grisham: Thomas Said There Are No Reliable Precedents, Leaving Abortion Laws to Legislature Is Call ‘to Save the Democracy’
Harris Delivers Word Salad Speech on Abortion After SCOTUS Ruling
Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a speech Friday at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) 39th Annual Conference in which she struggled to convey a coherent affirmation about the future of abortion, saying that “we are guided by what we see that can be, unburdened by what has been.” Speaking about the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade , Harris said that the “great aspiration of our nation has been to expand freedom. … But the expansion of freedom clearly is not inevitable, and it certainly is not something that just happens.” Harris, continuing to speak about overcoming political opposition, which she dubbed “odds and the obstacles,” tried to deliver an inspirational line to the audience about overcoming the Supreme Court’s ruling. “We push to move forward; that we are guided by what we see that can be, unburdened by what has been,” she stated, with no applause forthcoming. “And I know everyone in this room … [Read more...] about Harris Delivers Word Salad Speech on Abortion After SCOTUS Ruling
US Overturns Roe v Wade: Protesters Raise their Pitch as Conservative States Ban Abortions
Abortion rights supporters prepared to fan out across America Saturday for a second day of protest against the Supreme Court’s thunderbolt ruling, as state after conservative state moved swiftly to ban the procedure. Deeply polarised America woke up to a new level of division: between states that will now or soon deny the right to abortion, enshrined for 50 years, and those that still allow it. Dozens of new protests were planned Saturday from coast to coast, a day after demonstrations across the country that were largely peaceful — although police fired tear gas on protesters in Phoenix, Arizona and police in riot gear moved to disperse a hard core of protesters in downtown Los Angeles. Fuelling the mobilisation, many fear that the Supreme Court, with a clear conservative majority made possible by Donald Trump, might now set its sights on rights like same-sex marriage and contraception. At least eight right-leaning states imposed immediate abortion bans — with a similar number … [Read more...] about US Overturns Roe v Wade: Protesters Raise their Pitch as Conservative States Ban Abortions
Sens. Warren, Smith urge Biden to declare public health emergency following abortion ruling
Two of the leading Democratic senators in the reproductive rights space are urging President Joe Biden to declare a public health emergency as nearly two dozen states move to ban the procedure following Roe v. Wade’s official repeal Friday. In an op-ed published by The New York Times Saturday, Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Tina Smith of Minnesota said the emergency declaration would help "protect abortion access for all Americans" and unlock "critical resources and authority that states and the federal government can use to meet the surge in demand for reproductive health services." Ending the constitutional right to abortion has brought the nation to “a perilous time that threatens millions of women,” Warren and Smith wrote in the op-ed, adding that now "the government — not the person who is pregnant — will make the critical decision about whether to continue a pregnancy." Both senators also proposed changing the court’s composition, reforming … [Read more...] about Sens. Warren, Smith urge Biden to declare public health emergency following abortion ruling
Senate Democrats’ bill to keep abortion legal nationwide falls to GOP-led filibuster

Blinken Launches Review to Make Sure Employees Can Have Abortions
Secretary of State Antony Blinken sent a message to State Department employees saying he has launched a review of how all employees can access abortions going forward. “Team, I wanted to be sure you all saw the public statement I issued a moment ago. I know many of you may be concerned, saddened, or angry in light of today’s news. I have instructed Under Secretary [John] Bass to manage a review of how we can make sure that all of our employees can access the reproductive healthcare they need going forward,” he said in the message. “We will be in touch in the weeks ahead,” he wrote. The messaged echoed one coming from Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, who vowed to ensure that troops have access to abortions.
