Almost two years after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, the smaller island of Vieques still does not have a hospital. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has less than three weeks to explain to Congress why the agency has no concrete plans to help rebuild the facility. The ultimatum comes after Democratic lawmakers sent a letter addressed to FEMA’s acting administrator Peter T. Gaynor on Wednesday, seeking answers as to why “U.S. citizens still cannot access comprehensive medical care” almost two years after the hospital was shuttered due to damage caused by Maria in 2017. In the letter, the members of Congress reference the case of a 64-year-old cancer patient who waited 32 straight hours — sleeping and eating in her car — to ensure she had a spot on the ferry that takes residents from the smaller island to the mainland to reach a doctor in the capital city. About 9,000 people live in Vieques and hundreds of people commute to the mainland by boat, which is … [Read more...] about The Puerto Rican island of Vieques still has no hospital. ‘Abandoned’: Archbishop breaks down describing victims of deadly human smuggling
SAN ANTONIO —Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller experienced hours of anguish as he paid hospital visits to the surviving migrants who’d been inside a tractor trailer rig where dozens of people were found dead amid the sweltering heat. As of Tuesday afternoon, the death toll had risen to 51, according to Texas officials, in what's believed to be the worst case of human smuggling in recent U.S. history. García-Siller, the archbishop of the diocese of San Antonio, wanted to be sure the survivors knew people here were helping them, cared about them and praying for them. Seeing the condition of most of the patients,“it was very easy to picture in some way what was inside that trailer. They were asphyxiated,” he said. “That trailer was abandoned. The bottom line is that immigrants were abandoned. People. Woman, 21, rushed for lifesaving surgery after Specsavers warn she may have tumour
A young woman who thought she needed glasses was shocked when an optician suspected a brain tumour and doctors sent her for emergency surgery - saying if it had been a day later she would have died. Ellie Musgrove, 21, started experiencing severe headaches and neck pain after her 21st birthday in January 2022, but she knew it was more than just a hangover after only celebrating with two alcoholic drinks. Ellie then realised she couldn't see properly when she was plucking her eyebrows - her vision was impaired with black spots and double vision. She called her GP and was prescribed antibiotics over the phone for an ear infection, but her symptoms didn't improve, which prompted her to book an appointment with the opticians. Thinking she needed glasses, Ellie visited Specsavers with her dad, Mike, 54, a commercial landlord, on March 20, before being rushed to Salford Royal Hospital , Greater Manchester, after the optician noticed swelling of her optic nerve. Just 12 hours … [Read more...] about Woman, 21, rushed for lifesaving surgery after Specsavers warn she may have tumour
Penny Wong is my daughter’s hero, says proud Sabahan shopkeeper
KOTA KINABALU: For the last 22 years, Chris Chu has been diligently selling newspapers and magazines without much fanfare from his small shop in Foh Sang here. But work on Thursday (June 30) had a unique and different meaning as he was about to meet a very special person. “I have been sharing about Sabah-born Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong to my family members and my daughter made a painting of her,” he said. Chu, 55, said his daughter Tania was so inspired by Penny’s life story and achievements that the nine-year-old quickly sketched a portrait of the Australian politician the night before. “We only knew she was coming in on Tuesday (June 28) night and we have never met Penny but she is my daughter’s hero. It is very outstanding for a Sabah-born person to be a senator in the Australian parliament. “It’s very special as she could even helm a higher position (one day). Everything is possible,” he said, after presenting the drawing to Wong during her visit to Foh Sang. … [Read more...] about Penny Wong is my daughter’s hero, says proud Sabahan shopkeeper
Rosena Allin-Khan MP describes finding her dad bruised and bleeding in a care home
Labour MP Rosena Allin-Khan has has told Parliament of her family’s heartbreak when they feared her dad was being mistreated in a care home. The MP said her father was found “bloodied, bruised, and unconscious in suspicious circumstances” in a home they had been told was safe, with no explanation for how he got these injuries. She said: “The final nail in the coffin, and the point of no return, was when we found my father unconscious on the floor, with blood on the walls and the floor, and a carer’s set of keys left next to him. “Following this, he spent one month in hospital.” ( Image: Steve Bainbridge) Her struggle to get answers has left her worried for others in the same situation. “If two young professionals can endure what happened in the following months in pursuit of answers I fear deeply for the elderly in our community, such as the 80-year-old woman who herself is frail, who is caring for her husband with dementia, and who is too fearful to speak out.” … [Read more...] about Rosena Allin-Khan MP describes finding her dad bruised and bleeding in a care home

MIAMI (AP) — A woman whose arm and leg were shattered from mine-like projectiles shot into her apartment. A young man whose face was nearly blown away by a rocket-propelled grenade. A man whose chest and liver were obliterated from a missile strike. These were among the cases that Dr. Enrique Ginzburg, trauma medical director at Jackson South Ryder Trauma Center, encountered on his recent trip to Ukraine, where he worked side by side with local physicians performing complex surgeries on victims of Russia’s invasion of the Eastern European country. “It’s a very rewarding experience at this point in my life (...) to be able to contribute to such a humanitarian mission,” says Ginzburg, also a professor of surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. In early April, Ginzburg traveled with a small team of trauma surgeons to the Lviv Clinical Emergency Hospital in western Ukraine to provide medical support and training for Ukrainian physicians. The Myth of the Golden Years
“You’ll want to read this,” my wife said, handing me the Sunday Boston Globe . The cover story that week in late September 2020 was about a 62-year-old woman who had colon cancer that had metastasized. She died in a local hospital; her husband was also in poor health and could not take care of her at home. After she died, he moved into an area facility. Reading of someone so close to my own age succumbing to a highly preventable disease was a bit unsettling. The dateline, however, was the reason my wife had given me the paper. The story was from my hometown in Massachusetts, and the facility where the husband now lived was down the street from my childhood home. When I was a boy, we joked, far too easily, about “putting” people there when they got old. In later years, the joking ended when my father had to stay there briefly as his health began to fail. My brother then passed through its doors on his way to the final stop in a VA hospital. The couple in the story had struggled … [Read more...] about The Myth of the Golden Years
