Soaring inflation to hit Britain harder than any other major economy, BoE warns
Soaring inflation will hit Britain harder than any other major economy during the current energy crisis, the governor of the Bank of England has warned. Andrew Bailey said the UK’s economy would likely weaken earlier and be more intense than others as a result of the energy price shock that all European economies face. The situation was further exacerbated in Britain by the “structural legacy” left by Covid in the labour market as companies struggled with a lack of workers. “Unfortunately, there is going to be a further step-up in UK inflation later this year because that’s a product of the way the energy price cap interacts with the energy prices we have observed over the last few months,” Mr Bailey told a European Central Bank (ECB) conference in Sintra, Portugal , on Wednesday. Recommended Over £130m handed to housing providers named and shamed by regulator “I think the UK economy is probably weakening rather earlier and somewhat more than … [Read more...] about Soaring inflation to hit Britain harder than any other major economy, BoE warns
British-era Patna DM office building shown in ‘Gandhi’ razed
Historic British-era Patna District Magistrate's office building, part of the centuries-old Collectorate campus, which was featured in key scenes in Oscar-winning film 'Gandhi' has been demolished, sending a wave of grief among heritage lovers and Gandhians. Bulldozers gnawed at the elegant two-storey main Patna Collectorate building, situated on the banks of the river Ganga, a couple of days ago, reducing it to a skeletal state. The building was felled as part of the redevelopment project of the Bihar government. On Wednesday, labourers carried away bricks from the mountains of rubble that lay deposited next to what remained of the old building, which once was the seat of the district administration and was said to have been constructed in the early 20th century. The building was also adorned with an ornate iron-made spiral staircase mounted on its western facade. Heritage lovers of the city had earlier appealed to the authorities to rescue its historical artefacts, such as … [Read more...] about British-era Patna DM office building shown in ‘Gandhi’ razed

Tories U-turn over Schools Bill ‘power grab’ after peers threaten revolt
Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi has U-turned on plans to give the Government sweeping powers over academies in the face of a looming revolt. In a major climbdown, Education Minister Baroness Barran told peers that chunks of the Schools Bill would be stripped out after it was branded a Government "power grab". Rebel peers had been threatening a revolt over Mr Zahawi's flagship legislation, which is currently making its way through the Lords. A string of former education ministers sounded the alarm over planned national academy standards, which would give the Government power to dictate things like the curriculum, pupil welfare and the length of the school day. Academies are state-funded but independent of local councils, which means they should have the power to make these decisions. Peers had described the plan as a power grab by the Department for Education ( Image: Getty Images) In her letter, Baroness Barran admitted “concerns have been expressed across … [Read more...] about Tories U-turn over Schools Bill ‘power grab’ after peers threaten revolt
UK Should Offer Americans Free Abortions After Roe v. Wade Repeal
A medical trade union in Britain will lobby the government to provide ‘free’ abortions for Americans in the wake of the repeal of Roe v. Wade . In response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and return the issue of abortion to the state level, the UK’s British Medical Association trade union will lobby its government to provide free abortions to all foreigners — including Americans — whether their own country will pay for the procedure or not. British taxpayers, presumably, would pick up the bill. Members of the British trade union also agreed to publicly condemn the U.S. court’s ruling, joining the likes of so-called ‘Conservative’ Party Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who previously lambasted the move as a “big step backwards”. According to a report by The Telegraph, the BMA approved a motion that would allow it to push the British state to “support the provision of free and safe abortion care to all nationals seeking this in the UK, without … [Read more...] about UK Should Offer Americans Free Abortions After Roe v. Raab’s opera slur towards Angela Rayner is a perfect example of Tory snobbery
Champagne socialism is back , said dynamite Dominic Raab with a cheeky grin and the now infamous wink aimed at Angela Rayner – whom, with Boris Johnson trying to escape his troubles by hiding overseas – he was facing off against at PMQs . What a card, eh. Bet the lads were cheering him on in the tea rooms after that. Our Raab bally well put the lady on the ropes, eh? What? WOT! Rayner, you see, had committed the cardinal sin of going to the opera. Glyndebourne in fact, where she’d indulged in a tipple. And how dare she. That’s reserved for toffs, isn’t it? The rich and well-heeled. The only lefties allowed through the doors are champagne-swilling meeja luvvies, who let the Tory side down by voting for the oppo because... I don’t know, social conscience? Raab may be an Oxford-educated lawyer, but he is an Asda price politician – so it shouldn’t come as any surprise that he had to resort to cheap tactics to protect himself from his vastly more talented … [Read more...] about Raab’s opera slur towards Angela Rayner is a perfect example of Tory snobbery
