Following the school shooting at Robb Elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, this week parents have been confronted with the issue of how to talk to their children about it. Newsweek spoke to Linda Reddy, a professor in the School Psychology Doctoral Program, and Maurice Elias, a professor of psychology and director of the Rutgers Social-Emotional and Character Development Lab about the tough questions ahead for parents. Both experts emphasized that parents should not shy away from the opportunity to reassure their children and connect with them following this tragic event. The pair also reflected on the mental state of Americans, changes that can have a positive influence on society, ways to potentially prevent future incidents, and how to deal with the grief and fear following nationally significant tragedies. How to Have the Conversation "[The how to talk your kids about it] answer is a little different depending on how close you are to the situation, Elias said. Her daughter was shot on live TV. Now she’s marching to demand gun control
Alison Parker had a close relationship with her mom. On Mother's Day in 2015, she took both of her parents wine-tasting and hiking around the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. And every Monday, she met her mom after her morning shift ended at the local news station to share lunch and do some shopping. "Those are the things I miss," Barbara Parker tells Newsweek . The world watched in horror when Alison, a 24-year-old reporter, was fatally shot on live TV on August 26, 2015, along with her colleague Adam Ward, a 27-year-old photojournalist, both with WDBJ7. The two were conducting a live interview at Bridgewater Plaza in Moneta, Virginia, when a gunman approached and killed them. The suspect, later identified as a former employee at their Roanoke news station, fatally shot himself before police could apprehend him. Much of the aftermath of the shooting played out on social media, as the suspect posted video footage and updates to Twitter as he fled. "For lack of better words, … [Read more...] about Her daughter was shot on live TV. Now she’s marching to demand gun control
Donald Trump is facing increasing opposition from within the Republican Party he represents
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is coming under assault from some prominent members of his own party, who are using multiple advertisements among their efforts to prevent him from racking up delegates and clinching the nomination over GOP rivals Ted Cruz and John Kasich. More than 120 members of the GOP foreign policy establishment, including former advisers to President George W. Bush, have signed an open letter declaring the billionaire unfit for the highest office of the United States. Some said they are instead open to supporting Cruz, Trump's closest rival, or even the Democratic Party front-runner, Hillary Clinton, according to The Hill . Several admitted they would vote for Clinton if the general election match-up pits her against Trump. Cruz this month has received endorsements from ex-GOP rivals Jeb Bush, Lindsey Graham and Carly Fiorina . Even Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, publicly shared that he would support Cruz in Utah's … [Read more...] about Donald Trump is facing increasing opposition from within the Republican Party he represents
Israel President calls for ‘renewable’ Middle East shaped by trust
Israel President Isaac Herzog told the global leaders, in Davos, at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting that he envisions a 'renewable' Middle East that embraces a new paradigm of tolerance, dialogue and trust. "Together, we can shape not only a new Middle East but a renewable Middle East," he said in a special address late on May 25. "... A renewable Middle East that is sustained by its own positive momentum, joint infrastructure and shared technologies for improving the world," he said. He added that the region can serve as a global hub of sustainable solutions in food, water and health, and as a source of energy, mostly solar, to Europe, Asia and Africa. Israel also produces natural gas from its offshore gas fields and is preparing to increase export capacity in the coming years. "Let us harness this momentous shift to foster interpersonal dialogue, people to people, heart to heart," he said. "By working with all countries of the region, we have an opportunity to … [Read more...] about Israel President calls for ‘renewable’ Middle East shaped by trust
U.N. official praises Indian peacekeepers for thwarting attack in Congo
Indian peacekeepers, as well as Blue Helmets from other nations, pushed back an attack by an armed group in Congo, a top U.N. official has said, lauding the peacekeepers’ efforts and “proactive role” in countering these assaults on the civilian population. India is the second-highest military (1,888) and fifth-highest (139) police-contributing country to the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). India has been among the largest troop-contributing countries to the U.N. peacekeeping missions. The U.N. Security Council has strongly condemned the attack on (MONUSCO) and Forces armées de la République démocratique du Congo (FARDC) positions by the Mouvement du 23 mars (M23) on May 22 in the area of Shangi, North Kivu. Asus Zenbook 14 Flip OLED Review: Flexible, Reliable But Expensive
The Asus Zenbook 14 Flip OLED laptop recently debuted in India, and it comes with a 360-degree “ergo-lift” design. Asus 8z Review: Compact, Powerful and Priced Right
The Asus 8z is a bold smartphone from Asus, which is known for high-end gaming laptops and smartphones. It comes with a 5.9-inch screen and Qualcomm’s erstwhile flagship Snapdragon 888 that still powers many premium smartphones like Galaxy Z Fold 3, the OnePlus 9 series, and more. Due to its small, compact form factor, many even called it ‘the iPhone 12/13 mini’ of the Android world. The analogy is partly accurate since the Asus 8z is still a thick device that measures 8.9mm. The iPhone 13 mini, on the other hand, features a relatively smaller 5.4-inch display, but it is far slimmer at 7.65mm. If we keep these measurements aside, Asus is clever enough to know that there still exists a market for compact smartphones. We received the Black colour model for review, and customers can choose the silver colour variant. The phone has a sole 8GB RAM and 128GB storage variant that costs Rs 42,999 on Flipkart. In case you’re wondering, the phone’s direct competitor, the iPhone 13 mini, costs … [Read more...] about Asus 8z Review: Compact, Powerful and Priced Right
Female Octopuses Indulge in Self-Destruction After Mating, Study Reveals Why
Do you know that female octopuses start torturing themselves from the time they reproduce and sometimes even eat themselves? Yes, that is true. The eight-limbed cephalopods have always put stress on the minds of scientists with their unique property of beating themselves after producing an egg. Recently, a group of scientists tried to find out the reason behind this bizarre habit of the mother octopuses. According to a study published in the journal Current Biology, the female octopus goes through a chemical imbalance in her body and releases a steroid hormone after mating. This hormone leads to multiple changes in their bodies, and they start torturing themselves and eating their organs. The study even talks about a study that tried to derive a similar answer in 1977. As per the old study, octopuses produce steroids and after they produce an egg, the level of it increases and the impact too. This raises the urge in them to bang their heads against the wall or just eat their parts, … [Read more...] about Female Octopuses Indulge in Self-Destruction After Mating, Study Reveals Why

EXCLUSIVE: House Republicans Call On Biden To Withdraw From World Health Organization
Republican Wisconsin Rep. Tom Tiffany sent a letter Thursday to President Joe Biden, calling on his administration to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) and requesting documents and communications between the Biden administration and the agency. The Daily Caller first obtained the letter spearheaded by Tiffany and led by three House Republicans on the Republican Study Committee (RSC). In the letter, the lawmakers slam Biden for reversing the Trump administration’s plan to withdraw from the WHO , saying the Biden administration has not achieved any reforms to the organization. They further mention that in April 2022, Biden’s administration proposed amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR) that the lawmakers say would expand the WHO’s global influence. The lawmakers then call for documents and communications between the Biden administration and the WHO and IHR. “Joe Biden’s decision to reenter the WHO on his first day in office perfectly … [Read more...] about EXCLUSIVE: House Republicans Call On Biden To Withdraw From World Health Organization
