I had known that Didion’s Parkinson’s was advancing; seven or eight months earlier, someone had told me that she was vanishing; someone else had told me that for the past two years, she hadn’t been able to speak. I didn’t want her to die. My sense of myself is in many ways wrapped up in the 40 essays in Slouching Towards Bethlehem and The White Album . I don’t know how many times I’ve read Democracy . “Call me the author,” she writes in that novel. “Let the reader be introduced to Joan Didion.” There are people who admire Joan Didion, and people who … [Read more...] about Joan Didion’s Magic Trick

Homeowner backed for threatening to call cops on HOA over airplane
A seaplane owner is finding support online after refusing to remove their plane, along with buoys and signs, from their property at the insistence of the HOA. The viral Reddit post recounting the situation, titled, "AITA for ignoring my neighbors and their HOA group," has been upvoted 9,600 times since it was shared in the subreddit "Am I the A**hole" on May 17. Redditor @Infinite-Badger1362 shared the post, revealing they live in a cottage they inherited from their grandfather. "The cottage is one of the oldest homes in the area, and unlike my neighbors, I am not a member of the HOA," the original poster (OP) revealed. "The cottage itself is a waterfront one in which I have a small grass yard that turns into a beach on the lake." The OP has never had an issue until very recently when it comes to their seaplane and buoys. The Redditor has a private pilot's license and owns a Piper Super Cub with floats, or pontoons, that give the plane buoyancy. When the OP isn't flying the … [Read more...] about Homeowner backed for threatening to call cops on HOA over airplane

ASEAN-US: On the same page, but not in the same boat on Indo-Pacific
Endy Bayuni (The Jakarta Post) Jakarta ● Thu, May 19, 2022 2022-05-19 02:17 0 02c2f042c5018a82e8094ec75262fb2f 1 Academia ASEAN,Joe-Biden,US,Kamala-Harris,summit,China,Indo-Pacific,outlook,strategy,South-China-Sea,Quad,investment Free The United States and ASEAN may have many things in common when it comes to the future of the Indo-Pacific, even on security issues, but they differ on how to deal with China. While Washington is trying to build alliances in the region to contain the rise of China, ASEAN has accepted China’s growing power and tries to include, rather than exclude, Beijing in the emerging regional architecture. There is one problem, though. China has not fully subscribed to the geographical definition of the Indo-Pacific region, suspecting that this framework is tailored to suit the US agenda. Besides, China does not have direct access to the Indian Ocean. But then, neither does the US for that matter, but this has not stopped it from … [Read more...] about ASEAN-US: On the same page, but not in the same boat on Indo-Pacific
Several incumbents lose N. Carolina legislative primaries
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Several state legislators won't be returning to the North Carolina General Assembly next January after primary losses, while former lawmakers had mixed results in trying to get back to the House or Senate. At least six incumbents — four Republicans and two Democrats — lost in Tuesday's primaries for seats in their current chamber. Three of those sitting Republicans ran against fellow GOP incumbents who lived in the same district due to redistricting changes. As of Wednesday, the Associated Press had not called a similar head-to-head race between two Senate Republicans. Two Senate Democrats — Sens. Kirk deViere and Ernestine Bazemore — and Republican Rep. Pat Hurley — also lost primaries for their seats. In addition, two current House members — Democrat Raymond Smith and Republican Lee Zachary — failed to win Senate primaries. Safe and Secure Transportation Systems
Cybersecurity executives in the automotive sector must embrace new organizational and product security standards that drive collaboration across the supply chain. Vehicle communication networks such as the controller area network (CAN) are not designed to authenticate message traffic. Now, rapid shifts in technology have introduced hyper-connectivity and automation that must be securely integrated into vehicles. Vehicles now include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, satellite, cellular, NFC and other communication stacks that enable vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure and personal connectivity. Hardware is integrated in support of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) in order to automate functions and safeguard drivers. Without a holistic approach to cybersecurity across the OEMs and myriad tier suppliers, these integrations cannot happen securely. The automotive industry is now moving toward the adoption of cybersecurity standards that enable OEMs and suppliers to better understand … [Read more...] about Safe and Secure Transportation Systems
