Legendary French heroine Joan of Arc will be portrayed as nonbinary in a radical departure from the historic figure's usual depiction at London’s Globe Theatre. A patron saint of France, who is beloved for her role in the Siege of Orleans between 1428 and 1429 — a major French military victory over the English during the Hundred Years War — the new interpretation of her life will be performed at the theater that was home to famed British playwright William Shakespeare . Nonbinary actor Isobel Thom will play the role in “I, Joan,” scripted with “they” and “them” pronouns by Charlie Josephine, who is also nonbinary, the Globe said in a news release. It will directed by Ilinca Radulian, who identifies as a woman. “Our story of Joan is full of joy and love and hope and magic and revolution,” Thom told NBC News by email Saturday. “Storytelling and art is a platform to share experiences, to stretch imaginations, to excite and inspire, to explore language, and to … [Read more...] about Joan of Arc to be portrayed as nonbinary in new production at London’s Globe Theatre

Hawaii voters picking nominees in race to succeed Gov. Ige
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 HONOLULU (AP) — The candidates running in Saturday's primary election to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. David Ige include a former first lady, a retired mixed martial arts champion and a congressman who moonlights as a Hawaiian Airlines pilot. Democratic U.S. Rep. Kaiali‘i Kahele's decision to run for governor has opened up his congressional seat representing rural Oahu and the Neighbor Islands. In the U.S. Senate, incumbent Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz is also up for reelection and is facing a primary challenge from a little-known candidate. Mets legend Mike Piazza wants you to buy his vodka … because it’s Italian
“We have to start off in Italian because it’s Italian vodka.” Mike Piazza expressed his gratitude in Italian, unprompted, by dropping a “grazie a tutti” four different times during a Friday night event promoting True Vodka, his latest business endeavor. “The Italian part is something that we’re very proud of,” said Piazza, who not long ago purchased an Italian soccer team only to sink them into bankruptcy. True Vodka, according to their own marketing material, is for rich people. They’ve identified their target demographic as people aged 30-50 with household income ranging from $125,000 to $350K, living in “aspirational urban venues and neighborhoods.” As one of the faces of the Mets, a team that’s always represented the city’s working class, Piazza is conveying a message that seems far more aligned with the yuppie Yankees. But, lest you forget, True Vodka is extremely Italian. This is not something that Piazza, who is from Pennsylvania, takes lightly. When asked about how … [Read more...] about Mets legend Mike Piazza wants you to buy his vodka … because it’s Italian

Editor Daily Rundown: Mask Confusion
MASK CONFUSION… NY TIMES… DAVID LEONHARDT: A Confusing Message — The C.D.C. recommends indoor masking for the vaccinated, but only in some places. As you can see, most of the Northeast and upper Midwest, as well as much of the West, have only “moderate” or “low” transmission. If that stays true, vaccinated residents in those places can generally remain unmasked, the C.D.C. says. […] Breakthrough infections among the vaccinated appear to be only a modest reason that the number of new cases has been rising, as I explained in Monday’s newsletter. When vaccinated people do get the virus, they are less likely to pass it on to others — and much less likely to get very sick. […] The country was polarized long before Covid. But the C.D.C. has not maximized its chances of being heard, either. That’s the communication problem I mentioned above. Its announcement of the new guidelines was both vague and technical, making it hard for many nonexperts to understand. The agency … [Read more...] about Editor Daily Rundown: Mask Confusion
Premier League: Manchester City Beat Bournemouth; Arsenal Pip Leicester City
Manchester City stormed ominously to the top of the Premier League by cruising to a 4-0 win over Bournemouth, while Gabriel Jesus opened his Arsenal account in a 4-2 win over Leicester on Saturday. As soaring temperatures across England forced the need for water breaks at all this weekend’s Premier League games, it was City who were on fire at the Etihad as promoted Bournemouth were blown away. Erling Haaland failed to score on his home debut, but the Norwegian showed there is more to his game than goals as he used his strength before sliding in Ilkay Gundogan to open the scoring. Kevin De Bruyne then took centre stage with a scintillating finish with the outside of his right foot to find the far corner before the Belgian turned provider for Phil Foden to make it 3-0 before half-time. City eased off the gas after the break but added to their lead 11 minutes from time when Jefferson Lerma turned Joao Cancelo’s cross into his own net. Jesus shines Haaland’s arrival at City … [Read more...] about Premier League: Manchester City Beat Bournemouth; Arsenal Pip Leicester City
Store owner says shot with homemade gun after customer loses lottery
A store owner claims to have been shot with a homemade weapon by a customer who became irate after losing the lottery. The alleged incident occurred on Wednesday morning in San Francisco, just after Hisham Abu had opened his business, Sam's Shop, for the day. A man entered the store with a lottery ticket, which Abu told him was not a winner, prompting him to become agitated, according to ABC 7 News. Abu said the man accused him of being responsible for his lottery loss. He also had a strange homemade device consisting of a piece of wood and balloon, which he used to attack the shop owner. "He told me, 'You sold a fake ticket,' and he had a balloon in his hand, with a pin from the front, and he had a piece of wood almost one foot long," Abu said. "[He] hit the balloon with a piece of wood, and bullet goes out and it hit my shoulder." Abu said that he was not even aware that the homemade contraption had shot him until it was pointed out by someone else. The unnamed man has … [Read more...] about Store owner says shot with homemade gun after customer loses lottery
‘John Wick 3 — Parabellum’ Review: Exhilarating Martial Arts Classic
The “parabellum” in the title of John Wick: Chapter 3 comes from the Latin Si vis pacem, para bellum — translation: If you desire peace, prepare for war , a line spoken by one of the movie’s great character actors. As effective as that line is, though, my favorite is a much simpler one that comes from our hero, John Wick (Keanu Reeves), when he’s asked, “What do you need?” His answer? “Guns. Lots of guns.” Oh. Hell. Yes. If the line sounds familiar, it comes from what is arguably Reeves’ most famous movie, The Matrix (1999). But America was a different place 20 years ago, there were no Democrat presidential candidates promising to take away our Second Amendment rights and imprison us using fascist executive orders; there were no cable news outlets spreading fake news in a desperate effort to disarm us. In 1999, the line sounded blunt, utilitarian; today it sounds, smells, and feels like freedom — like what art should be: a finger in the eye to the stuffy … [Read more...] about ‘John Wick 3 — Parabellum’ Review: Exhilarating Martial Arts Classic
