Another hunger emergency underway where we need to act quickly to save lives is the Central African Republic. The hunger crisis is so severe that close to half of the population (2.2. million) has no idea where their next meal is coming from. Their only goal is to find enough food to survive another day. Tragically this nation, which is the size of Texas, has largely been forgotten. But one way to remember the Central African Republic is every time we shop in a grocery, or go to a farm stand, as we take for granted having fresh produce available. In the Central African Republic they should also have plenty of food grown as well, as they have great farmland. But farmers cannot grow crops in a war zone. The United Nations said that in the Central African Republic, "People live in fear of attacks and abuses by armed groups, which limits their mobility and access to fields and forests for farming." In a land of potential abundance there is instead extreme hunger. The old … [Read more...] about The wolf at the door in the Central African Republic | Opinion

Christian School That Sued Biden Admin Over Title IX Expansion Says It Will Receive Federal Funding
A private Christian school in Tampa, Florida, will be granted federal aid for school lunches after the Biden administration threatened to revoke the aid for refusing the administration’s expanded Title IX guidelines. The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) challenged President Joe Biden and Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried in a lawsuit filed July 27 on behalf of the Grant Park Christian Academy, after Biden and Fried threatened to take away federal funding for school lunches, the ADF stated Monday in a press release. US to Send $4.5 Billion More to Ukraine, Bringing Total Aid in Russia War to $8.5 Billion
The United States will provide an additional $4.5 billion to Ukraine’s government, bringing its total budgetary support since Russia’s February invasion to $8.5 billion, the US Agency for International Development said on Monday. The funding, coordinated with the US Treasury Department through the World Bank, will go to the Ukraine government in tranches, beginning with a $3 billion disbursement in August, USAID, the Agency for International Development, said. It follows previous transfers of $1.7 billion in July and $1.3 billion in June, USAID said. Washington has also provided billions of dollars in military support, and plans a new $1 billion weapons package shortly. The US funds are to help the Ukrainian government maintain essential functions, including social and financial assistance for the growing poor population, children with disabilities, and millions of internally displaced persons, as the war drags on. Ukrainian officials estimate the country faces a $5 … [Read more...] about US to Send $4.5 Billion More to Ukraine, Bringing Total Aid in Russia War to $8.5 Billion
Vladimir Putin’s ‘she-wolf’ killed by missile as his first female colonel dies in war
Vladimir Putin has lost his first woman colonel, nicknamed his "she-wolf", in the war in Ukraine after a missile hit her car. The warmonger leader granted posthumous Hero of Russia honour - the Kremlin’s highest award - to Olga ‘Kursa’ Kachura, 52. She was a colonel in the forces of Russian puppet state Donetsk People’s Republic , where she commanded a rocket artillery division deployed against Ukraine. Putin propagandist Margarita Simonyan posted: “ Legendary Korsa died in Horlivka ... May she rest in peace…” Kachura recently featured in a documentary on the Russia Today TV channel - which has been banned in the UK for spouting Putin's propaganda - in which she alluded to herself being like a "she-wolf". She said: "She guards the hearth, her children, her family. Even in nature, no wolf will defend her cub as aggressively as a she-wolf." She is the 97th known colonel to have been killed in Putin’s war in Ukraine. Putin said he had awarded her “for courage and … [Read more...] about Vladimir Putin’s ‘she-wolf’ killed by missile as his first female colonel dies in war
California’s only known gray wolf pack has eight new pups
SAN FRANCISCO — California’s only known gray wolf pack has eight new pups. Eight youngsters were tallied in the Lassen Pack in northeastern California, according to an April-through-June report from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. Genetic testing of their excrement shows at least four are male and two are female, according to the agency. The father is a black-furred male that began traveling with the pack last year. He isn’t related to any other known California wolves, and his origin isn’t clear, the agency said. The pack in Lassen County now has at least 14 animals. Gray wolves were eradicated in California early in the last century because of their perceived threat to livestock. An Oregon wolf with a radio collar, dubbed OR-7, arrived in 2011 , becoming the first confirmed wolf in the California wild since 1924. OR-7 later returned to Oregon, where he founded the Rogue Pack before vanishing last fall. Other Oregon wolves, including several offspring of … [Read more...] about California’s only known gray wolf pack has eight new pups
How U.S. aid chief Samantha Power is fighting global food crisis and Russia
Samantha Power won fame as a human rights advocate and was picked by President Joe Biden to lead the agency that distributes billions of dollars in U.S. aid abroad, including providing more food assistance than anyone else in the world. But since Russia invaded Ukraine, that job includes a new task with a Cold War feel—countering Russia's messaging abroad. As administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, Power is dealing now with a global food crisis, brought on by local conflicts, the pandemic's economic upheaval, and drought and the other extremes typical of climate change. As the Biden administration spells out often, the problems have all been compounded by Russia invading Ukraine, deepening food shortages and raising prices everywhere. That set up an hearts-and-minds competition reminiscent of the days of the Soviet Union last month, when Power visited desperate families and struggling farmers in Horn of Africa nations. She watched relief workers give … [Read more...] about How U.S. aid chief Samantha Power is fighting global food crisis and Russia

The Shadow Pandemic
Updated at 9:50 a.m. ET C all it the “shadow pandemic,” as the United Nations did . As families around the world were forced into lockdown to stop the spread of coronavirus, they were given a simple message: Stay home, stay safe. Yet the ubiquity of domestic violence means that for millions of people, home is anything but safe. As one charity put it , “Abusers always work from home.” Over the past few months, the coronavirus and the measures needed to contain it have made life almost intolerable for those with controlling or violent partners. Counseling services have been withdrawn or moved online; supportive friends and relatives are physically out of reach. Schools, here in Britain and in much of the world, are still partially closed. Millions of workers are unemployed or on furlough, waiting to find out if their jobs still exist. Families are trapped together, racked by money worries, boredom, loneliness, and drug or alcohol use. As a result, there has been a … [Read more...] about The Shadow Pandemic
Ex Puerto Rico Gov. Wanda Vázquez charged with bribery
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Former Puerto Rico Gov. Wanda Vázquez was arrested Thursday on bribery charges related to the financing of her 2020 campaign, the latest hit to an island with a long history of corruption that brought fresh political upheaval to the U.S. territory. Vázquez is accused of engaging in a bribery scheme from December 2019 through June 2020 — while she was governor — with several people, including a Venezuelan-Italian bank owner, a former FBI agent, a bank president and a political consultant. “I am innocent. I have not committed any crime,” she told reporters. ”I assure you that they have committed a great injustice against me.” The arrest embarrassed and angered many in Puerto Rico who believe the island's already shaky image has been further tarnished, leaving a growing number of people who have lost faith in their local officials to … [Read more...] about Ex Puerto Rico Gov. Conservatives Believe Trump Is Above the Law
A former president was raided by federal law enforcement yesterday, reportedly over possession of classified documents. Although prosecution of former heads of state has occurred in other democracies, a form of government in which ostensibly no one is above the law , it has never happened in America, a place that did not even punish the leaders of a rebellion in defense of human bondage . The merits of a potential government case against Donald Trump, and of the basis for the FBI’s raid on Mar-a-Lago, cannot yet be evaluated, despite the assertions of many of Trump’s supporters and critics. A federal search warrant can be obtained only with probable cause and with the approval of a federal magistrate, but that does not mean that Trump is guilty of whatever alleged crime the FBI is investigating. Nor does the fact that Trump may be guilty of criminal conduct in other contexts mean that he is guilty here. But at the same time, the reflexive Republican insistence that the … [Read more...] about Conservatives Believe Trump Is Above the Law
