Brussels residents wary but attack seemed ‘inevitable’

March 23, 2016 by www.newsweek.com

Evening in central Brussels, and the full horror of Tuesday's attacks was clear. At least 31 people lay dead while a further 300 remain injured. A few people were drinking in bars, going outside for cigarettes. There was little of the defiance of Paris, following the attacks there November 13. Then, Parisians flocked to the bars, vowing " tous en terrasses, " promising that despite the militants' assaults, they would continue to eat and drink outside the city's bars and restaurants, in defiance of their oppressors. This time, young men who had sworn allegiance to the Islamic State militant group, also known as ISIS, the same group behind the Paris attacks, targeted hard, not soft targets. They didn't seek out the city's pleasure-seekers but its business people and commuters, those taking the metro to work or flights out of the capital. "When they caught Salah Abdeslam [one of the alleged Paris attackers], I thought things seemed calmer," says 23-year-old Boubacar Sow. August 4, 2022 by www.news18.com

Devika Rotawan, the youngest survivor and an eyewitness to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, has moved the Bombay High Court seeking allotment of residential premises after the Maharashtra government rejected her plea for it. This is the second time that Rotawan, now 23 years old, has approached the court. In 2020, she had filed a similar petition. On Thursday, when the petition came up for hearing before a division bench of Justices S V Gangapurwala and M S Karnik, additional government pleader Jyoti Chavan, who appeared for the Maharashtra government, said that pursuant to the October 2020 order, a compensation of Rs 13.26 lakh was handed over to Rotawan on compassionate grounds. … [Read more...] about 26/11 Terror Attacks: Youngest Survivor and Key Eyewitness Moves HC Seeking House from Govt

Paramedic has heart attack while treating patient for cardiac emergency

August 4, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A paramedic treating a patient having a cardiac arrest had a heart attack himself—and was saved by colleagues. Senior emergency medical technician Jeremy Williams, 53, was resuscitating a 30-year-old woman at her home in England, U.K. But the East of England Ambulance Service worker suddenly felt "excruciating" pain at the house in Stewartby, Bedfordshire. His teammates realized what was happening and some continued to treat the patient while others carried out an ECG on Williams. The other paramedics on the scene discovered Williams was having a heart attack and then worked side by side to manage both casualties and transfer them to separate hospitals. Williams underwent emergency surgery to have two stents fitted to unblock the arteries around his heart. Now he and the patient are both making full recoveries. Williams, of Kempston, said: "It was one of those things that never, ever happens. "I can laugh about it now because I'm glad to be here, but if it hadn't been for … [Read more...] about Paramedic has heart attack while treating patient for cardiac emergency

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt says Jeremy Corbyn would have ‘no moral authority’ to condemn terrorist attacks as Prime Minister

August 14, 2018 by www.mirror.co.uk

The Foreign Secretary has said Jeremy Corbyn would have no moral authority to condemn terrorist attacks on British citizens if he ever became prime minister. Jeremy Hunt's deeply damaging comments have ratcheted up the pressure on the Labour leader in the ongoing anti-Semitism row. Mr Corbyn came under attack from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after it emerged that he attended a ceremony where a wreath was was laid in memory of Palestinians suspected of being behind the Munich Olympics massacre. The Labour leader has acknowledged he was present at the event at the Palestinian Martyrs Cemetery in Tunisia in 2014, but said he did not "think" he was involved in the wreath-laying. Jeremy Hunt questioned whether Corbyn had the "moral authority" to condemn terrorism ( Image: Photothek) Supporters insisted he had made clear his abhorrence for the I972 Munich attack, when 11 Israeli athletes were killed, and that he condemned all terrorist acts. How 1972 Munich Olympics massacre that left 11 Israelis dead became the mother of modern terror attacks

August 14, 2018 by www.mirror.co.uk

In the Summer of 1972 the eyes of the world were fixed on Munich and a truly historic Olympic Games. The West Germans were desperate to lay the ghost of Berlin 1936, the tournament hijacked by Adolf Hitler. So this would be Die Heiteren Spiele – “the cheerful Games” – with a sunny logo and Waldi the dachshund mascot. And, thanks to new satellite technology, sporting fans across the globe could enjoy the sports fest live. But on September 5, 900 million watched these Games hijacked by evil too, and history written in blood, not the sweat and tears of sporting glory. Eight heavily armed terrorists from Palestinian group Black September broke into apartments in the Olympic village taking 11 Israelis hostage. The subsequent siege and bungled rescue bid left all the Israelis dead, along with five Palestinians and a German police officer. Eight members of the Palestinian Black September group kidnapped the athletes in the Olympic village ( Image: Getty Images) … [Read more...] about How 1972 Munich Olympics massacre that left 11 Israelis dead became the mother of modern terror attacks

A concerted attack on RTI

October 14, 2020 by www.thehindu.com

This year marks 15 years of the enactment of the Right to Information (RTI) law, which has empowered millions to assert their citizenship and show truth to power. It was a vibrant grassroots movement, led not just by the educated elite but the working poor across the country, that eventually resulted in the passage of the historic law in 2005. The right to information has been upheld by the Supreme Court as a fundamental right flowing from Article 19 of the Constitution, which guarantees every citizen the right to free speech and expression. Without access to relevant information, people’s ability to formulate opinions and express themselves meaningfully is curtailed. Since its enactment, the RTI law has been used by people to seek information to actively participate in decision-making processes and hold governments accountable. “Smash Ultimate” Update Version 11.01 nerfs Wii Fit Trainer exploit

March 24, 2021 by www.newsweek.com

Nintendo surprised Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players with an unannounced update on Wednesday. Updates in Smash Ultimate usually change the way that fighters play, and this one is no different. Instead of a handful of fighters being adjusted, though, version 11.01 fixes just one character—Wii Fit Trainer. Wii Fit Trainer may not be considered one of the most powerful characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate , but the most recent update before Wednesday's— version 11.0, released on March 4—altered the way the fighter handled so much that players were taking advantage of it. The official Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Version 11.01 patch notes consists of a single line, which says, "Vulnerability when landing after using the Wii Fit Trainer's side special Header had decreased unintentionally, so this has been adjusted." So what does this mean? This means that Wii Fit Trainer's side special, called Header, allowed for the character to be invulnerable for a longer period … [Read more...] about “Smash Ultimate” Update Version 11.01 nerfs Wii Fit Trainer exploit
