World Greece Wildfire Wildfires are sweeping through areas around the Greek capital of Athens, leaving at least 50 people dead and more than 100 injured. Fires are burning on three fronts in the Attica region in the south of the country, including one near the village of Mati which engulfed the area and sent residents fleeing into the sea to escape the fast-moving flames, the BBC reported. Much of Mati, which sits around 18 miles east of Athens, has been destroyed by the inferno. The nearby town of Rafina is a popular tourist destination, particularly for pensioners and children attending holiday camps. RAFINA, Greece — Wildfires raged through seaside resorts near the Greek capital, torching homes, cars and forests and killing at least 50 people, authorities said, raising the death toll Tuesday after finding 26 bodies believed to be family members huddled together, some of them hugging.Many tourists and residents fled toward the coastline to escape the ferocious flames and choking smoke. Authorities evacuated more than 700 people by sea overnight, said Merchant Marine deputy minister Nektarios Santorinios, whose ministry is in charge of the coast guard.But some didn't make it to the beach. GREECE has declared a state of emergency after two major wildfires burnt out of control either side of Athens. Authorities have been battling to bring the fires under control and the government has asked other European countries for help supplying helicopters and additional firefighters. What caused the Greece wildfires? A combination of a dry winter and a hot summer where temperatures have risen above 40C are said to have created tinderbox conditions. Powerful, hot winds spread the flames, forcing hundreds from their homes. Citizens' Protection Minister Nikos Toskas suggested arsonists caused the fires. AN IRISH bride on her honeymoon has suffered serious burns while her new husband is missing in Greece at the heart of horror wild fires which have already killed at least 79 people. Zoe Holohan and Brian O’Callaghan-Westropp were married in Ireland last Thursday and had been holidaying close to Mati, at the epicentre of the disaster. It's understood the couple became separated in the resort as they tried to flee the flames - which officials fear may have been started by arsonists. Zoe received burns and was last night being treated at a local hospital, while family and friends were waiting anxiously for news of Brian’s whereabouts. Hundreds of people were trapped in the eastern resort of Mati on Monday night as flames whipped around them. Many jumped into the sea to survive, but others died from suffocation either in their cars, or trapped on the edge of steep cliffs. The Greek fire brigade said the death of a survivor in hospital had brought the toll up to 80. The service was also receiving dozens of calls reporting missing persons, but it was unclear if some of them were among those found dead, a spokesperson said. Rescue teams combed through the area and the sea on Wednesday, trying to locate anything which could offer clarity on the missing, who are thought to number about 40.
