An 80-year-old Nebraska woman recently earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO), proving that it is never too late for one to pursue his or her dreams. Eighty-year-old Madeline Adams first started at UNO back in 1960, but she was unable to finish her degree at the time because, as she told KETV, “life happened.” “(I was) expecting, married, second child, third child, divorced, moved out of state,” she added. The octogenarian moved to Missouri, where she worked in real estate for a decade and a half before relocating again to Honolulu, Hawaii, KETV reported. Oakley city officials said a 74-year-old woman shot and killed a 51-year-old man in self-defense early Friday morning following an “act of physical violence” that took place between them. Police were summoned to a home on the 200 block of West Cypress Road following a report that the man had been shot. Officers found him in the driveway of the home and administered first aid, but the man died at the scene. Three people were inside the house, Oakley city officials said, a man and two women, including the 74-year-old woman who resided there. She had an elder-abuse restraining order against the man she allegedly shot, and the two had a “history of physical violence between them,” city officials said. A 69-year-old woman last seen more than a week ago was found "aware and alert" in woods less than a mile from her home in Prince Edward County, Virginia, on Monday, authorities said. Aletha Gee Walton was taken to a hospital for evaluation, the office of the county sheriff said in a statement. It wasn't immediately clear if she was injured or suffered diminished health from possible exposure, and her condition was unknown. Walton was last seen May 15 at her home in the Simplicity area of Prince Edward County, about 70 miles southwest of Richmond, the office said. London Breed made history by becoming the first African-American woman elected mayor of San Francisco, after her opponent Mark Leno conceded defeat in the race. She will serve out the rest of former mayor Edwin Lee's term, until 2020, after Lee died of a heart attack at the end of last year. Breed had initially been appointed acting mayor after Lee's death but was replaced until the election after city supervisors voted her out. "I am so hopeful about the future of our city, and I am looking forward to serving as your mayor. I am truly humbled, and I am truly honored," Breed, a Democrat, said at a news conference after her victory. A search is underway for a white man suspected of what officials are calling an "unprovoked and senseless" shooting that killed a 7-year-old black girl while she was in a car with her mother and three sisters near Houston. Jazmine Barnes was killed by a man driving a red pickup truck while she was riding in her mother's car Sunday morning on the way to a grocery store, authorities said.
