DUBLIN (Reuters) - Paddy Power Betfair is to challenge tax bills from Germany and Greece worth a combined 55 million euros (49 million pounds), the bookmaker said on Wednesday. A German court has ordered the firm to pay 40 million euros in relation to Betfair Exchange, which operated in Germany until November 2012, it said in a statement. Separately the firm has been served with a Greek tax bill of 15 million euros for 2012-14. "The Group strongly disputes the basis of these assessments, and in line with the legal and tax advice we have received, is confident in our grounds to appeal," Paddy Power Betfair said in a statement. "We therefore intend to do so." The firm is forecasting underlying core earnings of 465-480 million pounds for 2018, excluding losses at its newly merged U.S. sports betting business. It is due to publish its annual results on March 6. (Reporting by Conor Humphries; editing by David Evans) … [Read more...] about Paddy Power Betfair to challenge 55 million euros in tax bills

APPROVING a new £55 million office development beside inner city homes in Belfast unlawfully breached residents' rights to privacy, the High Court heard today. Lawyers representing the Market community claimed building up to 14 storeys-high would be invasive and overshadow homes in the area. They also contended that those who gave the green light to the construction were misinformed and failed to properly assess the impact on the area. Liam McCollum QC contended: "We say the decision clearly falls to be quashed." Proceedings were issued against Belfast City Council after it accepted a planning application for the development at Stewart Street and East Bridge Street, near Central Station. The 26,000 square metre Grade A office block is expected to create 350 construction jobs and generate permanent employment for 2,500 people. But more than 200 households in the adjoining neighbourhood have objected to it being given the go-ahead. They insist it will seriously impact on their right … [Read more...] about Markets’ residents challenge new £55 million office development near homes
Wisconsin's beleaguered veterans home at King is getting a $55 million infusion of federal funding as part of the recent federal omnibus spending bill. The amount is the same as what the Legislative Audit Bureau last year found the state had diverted from the facility between 2003 and 2016 as maintenance projects languished.U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin announced the federal funding as part of $575 million in grants for veterans projects around the country to improve facilities. The amount is included in the recent $1.3 trillion spending bill, which included $143 billion in new defense and domestic spending, which some have criticized for growing the national debt. The King funding includes $52 million that will be paired with $28 million in state funds for construction of John R.
