For the first time in the history of Alamo Colleges, all of the community college district’s administrative employees are working in the same location at a new building, a $55 million facility that will be dedicated Thursday. The newly opened complex, officially the District Support Offices, houses more than 500 employees in five buildings arranged in three wings, totaling more than 150,000 square feet and connected by walkways and a major breezeway. “We love everything about it,” said Lily Burnham, who was chatting with Mary Schlabig and Monica Cortez from the financial aid department. “Especially the windows.” Cortez said her old location required a phone call for most interactions with others in the department, but in the new building, colleagues are down the hall — “If we want to go somewhere, we just go,” she said. San Diego’s Locana has raised $55 million to develop drugs with its gene therapy technology, derived from UC San Diego.Privately held Locana is targeting diseases caused by abnormally repeated genetic sequences, CEO Jeff Ostrove said Wednesday. Examples of such ailments include Huntington’s disease and forms of myotonic dystrophy.The company’s founding technology used a form of the popular CRISPR DNA editing system, adapted by UCSD’s Gene Yeo and David Nelles, to target RNA, the messenger molecule made from DNA. They co-founded the company in 2016.Yeo and Nelles led development of a CRISPR system that could be carried into cells by an adeno-associated virus, a common vehicle to deliver genes into cells. DUBLIN (Reuters) - Paddy Power Betfair is to challenge tax bills from Germany and Greece worth a combined 55 million euros (49 million pounds), the bookmaker said on Wednesday. A German court has ordered the firm to pay 40 million euros in relation to Betfair Exchange, which operated in Germany until November 2012, it said in a statement. Separately the firm has been served with a Greek tax bill of 15 million euros for 2012-14. "The Group strongly disputes the basis of these assessments, and in line with the legal and tax advice we have received, is confident in our grounds to appeal," Paddy Power Betfair said in a statement. "We therefore intend to do so." The firm is forecasting underlying core earnings of 465-480 million pounds for 2018, excluding losses at its newly merged U.S. sports betting business.
