Manhattanhenge: New Yorkers Throng to Capture Sun’s Sorcery on Manhattan Streets

June 22, 2022 by www.news18.com

Twice a year, a spot in New York’s Manhattan offers a view into a spectacular sunset. The term used to describe this sunset which is viewed between the two skyscrapers is called Manhattanhenge. Most recently the streets of Manhattan saw a big gathering of people as they all reached out for their smartphones to capture the event. American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is often credited for discovering this modern-day phenomenon. Astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium, Tyson described this event as a special day that comes twice a year, when the setting Sun “aligns precisely with the Manhattan street grid, creating a radiant glow of light across Manhattan’s brick and steel canyons, simultaneously illuminating both the north and south sides of every cross street of the borough’s grid.” You may have noticed that the term Manhattanhenge is a portmanteau of Manhattan and the ancient landmark in England’s Salisbury Plain, the Stonehenge. According to Tyson. The … [Read more...] about Manhattanhenge: New Yorkers Throng to Capture Sun’s Sorcery on Manhattan Streets

Uvalde’s fury builds one month after school massacre as probe reveals numerous failures

June 23, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

UVALDE, Texas — A month after a gunman walked unobstructed into a Texas elementary school and killed 21 people , grief has given way to anger as an investigation reveals that the mass tragedy at Robb Elementary School could have been prevented or at the very least minimized. Parents want to know why Salvador Ramos was able to walk into the school without encountering a locked door and why police waited more than an hour to engage the shooter. Residents want to know why he was able to obtain a powerful assault weapon so soon after turning 18 and whether more could have been done to flag him as a potential threat. Four weeks later, more questions than answers plague Uvalde, lingering over the tight-knit community like a heavy blanket with little room to breathe. People struggle to mourn because they are too busy seeking accountability from their leaders. Death by Plastic: Climate Activist Builds Funeral Pyres Out of Bottles to Highlight Pollution

December 24, 2020 by www.news18.com

Do you think twice before tossing a disposable water bottle you bought at a tourist spot? If you’re one of the better ones, you’ll look for the nearest bin instead of littering, but disposing the bottle itself adds to a much larger problem: Single-use plastics. Indians on an average generate almost 26 kgs of single-use plastic in a year. 26 kgs which are usually not recycled, get broken down into microplastics and ultimately find their way to our food chain. Basing his newest art installation on these 26 kgs, climate change activist Aakash Ranison, who went viral last year for his marine cemetary in Kerala, has come up with the idea for his latest exhibition. “The only way to make people realize the consequences of their actions is holding a mirror up to them” says Ranison in an interview with News18. After Marine Cemetary , the new exhibition focuses on the eventual outcome of plastic pollution: Death. In Rishikesh, which attracted over 6 lakh tourists in 2018 … [Read more...] about Death by Plastic: Climate Activist Builds Funeral Pyres Out of Bottles to Highlight Pollution

What we learnt this Formula One season

November 25, 2017 by www.thehindu.com

After 19 races across the world, the 2017 F1 season comes to an end this weekend at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. With the championships sealed last month in Mexico, we look at the year’s talking points: Hamilton is the greatest this generation Not too long back, Michael Schumacher’s 68 poles and 91 wins seemed like it would defy another generation. But over the last four years, Hamilton has run rampage over the record books with 72 poles and 62 wins. In this time, he has won nearly 50 per cent of the races each year. This season he has won nine of 19, and could finish again with double-digit wins. While he is tied with Sebastian Vettel on world titles (4), he has a 15-win advantage over his arch rival. With stable regulations for the next three years, those 91 wins don’t seem too far away. It’s safe to say he is the best this generation, but, just 32, he could end up among the greatest ever. Ferrari needs to look itself in the mirror After last year’s technical … [Read more...] about What we learnt this Formula One season

All that propelled Arjun to the top

June 17, 2015 by www.thehindu.com

First preference the IITs, then BITS Pilani, with NITs bringing up the rear. Even while he was besieged with congratulatory messages, phone calls, and media interviews, top rank holder in the engineering entrance examinations B. Arjun was very sure where his priorities lay. When the results of the examinations were announced here on Tuesday, success knocked for a second time at Arjun’s door. A few weeks earlier, it came in the guise of a second rank at the all India level in the Plus Two CBSE examinations. On Tuesday, when Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb dropped by to offer his best wishes, it was perhaps a déjà vu moment at Arjun’s apartment in the city. The Minister had come calling that day too after the CBSE results were declared. Along with the Education Minister and presspersons, there was another presence in Arjun’s house — that of his father and former naval officer Balgovind Kunhiraman who joined in the celebrations via a Skype video link from Abu Dhabi. If he has his … [Read more...] about All that propelled Arjun to the top
