Victoria Beckham sells jumper full of holes for £650 – and it’s already sold out
Holey Moley! Fashion designer Victoria Beckham’s new jumper is not exactly a winter warmer – but it’s selling like hot cakes for £650. The pully is perforated with four rows of diamond-shaped holes, which might not be practical but, according to Posh Spice, they’re a “key” look. Her website says: “Hand stitched cutouts, made by pinching and finishing two ribbed edges together, were a key detail in the Autumn Winter 2020 show. “Here, they create a three-dimensional, textured argyle motif. “Based on an iconic, signature cut from the VB archive that’s been re-imagined and updated, the jumper is knit in a strong 2x3 rib that naturally creates a fitted silhouette.” The model poses in the jumper, complete with especially removed diamond-shaped segments But one customer who browsed the range said: “I’d think twice before going out in that, especially in October.” Despite the hefty price tag, one size of the jumper, that comes in khaki or navy, has already sold out. Another … [Read more...] about Victoria Beckham sells jumper full of holes for £650 – and it’s already sold out
Big Brother: Govt to Use Drones to Monitor Property Zoning Compliance
Drones will be deployed in a Dutch municipality to monitor whether people’s homes meet zoning regulations, monitor construction sites, and protected wildlife areas. The Dutch municipality of Deventer has been accused of wanting to usher in an Orwellian society after it revealed plans to use drones to monitor compliance with local laws such as zoning regulations or even wildlife protection. Mayor Ron König defended the plan, saying : “We don’t make videos and no one who comes into the picture is recognisable,” claiming that drones would be used in limited instances such as monitoring the construction of buildings. “That’s very useful in the city because you have big buildings there. If you want to supervise in the normal way, you sometimes have to build risers or rent aerial work platforms. It’s much more convenient and efficient to deploy drones.” König said that drones could also be deployed to watch over protected nature areas, explaining: “Deventer has a large outdoor … [Read more...] about Big Brother: Govt to Use Drones to Monitor Property Zoning Compliance

George W. Bush said tonight that he was arrested for driving while intoxicated 24 years ago while visiting his family's vacation home in Kennebunkport, Me. After a boisterous rally here, Mr. Bush hastily arranged his first news conference in about a month to confirm reports by WCSH-TV and WPXT-TV in Portland, Me., about his arrest. ''I'm not proud of that,'' Mr. Bush said, clutching the hand of his wife, Laura, as he faced reporters in a driveway. ''I've oftentimes said that years ago I made some mistakes. I drank too much, and I did on that night.'' He said that he had been driving, that he had admitted to a police officer who pulled him over that he had been drinking and that he had paid a fine. ''I regret that it happened,'' he said. ''But it did. I've … [Read more...] about THE 2000 CAMPAIGN: A DRIVING OFFENSE; Bush Acknowledges an Arrest for Drunken Driving in 1976
Donald Trump, and the Sordid Tradition of Suppressing October Surprises
Secretive talks in the waning days of a campaign. Furtive phone calls. Ardent public denials. American history is full of October surprises — late revelations, sometimes engineered by an opponent, that shock the trajectory of a presidential election and that candidates dread. In 1880, a forged letter ostensibly written by James A. Garfield claimed he wanted more immigration from China, a position so unpopular it nearly cost him the election. Weeks before the 1940 election, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s press secretary kneed a Black police officer in the groin, just as the president was trying to woo skeptical Black voters. (Roosevelt’s response made history: He appointed the first Black general and created the Tuskegee Airmen.) But the scandal that has ensnared Donald J. Trump, the paying of hush money to a pornographic film star in 2016 , is in a rare class: an attempt not to bring to light an election-altering event, but to suppress one. The payoff to Stormy Daniels that has a … [Read more...] about Donald Trump, and the Sordid Tradition of Suppressing October Surprises

October Surprises Don’t Necessarily Sway Elections, or Occur in October
In a breathless month with a decade’s worth of political bombshells, the phrase “October surprise” has become a regular part of the news lexicon. By the strictest definition, an October surprise is news specifically (and cynically) timed by one side or another to sway an election, with evidence that it changed voters’ minds and moved the polls. More loosely, the term is applied to any big, late development, deliberate or not, perhaps even ones that show no sign of altering the outcome. Some reference sources say the phrase was first used in the 1972 presidential election, while others trace it to the 1980 campaign (the first time it was used by The New York Times). The concept, of course, predates the wording. Here are some examples of what could be considered October surprises. OCT. 31, 1968 President Lyndon Baines Johnson announced a halt to bombing of North Vietnam, based on his claim that peace talks had “entered a new and a very much more hopeful phase,” and he invited … [Read more...] about October Surprises Don’t Necessarily Sway Elections, or Occur in October
