EUGeneral Data Protection Regulation Discussion BroadcastThe Assistant European Data Protection Supervisor and the Rapporteur for the Data Protection Regulation have discussed the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). They noted that the timeline that had been set for the end of 2015 was nearing, but there was optimism that there could be political agreement in this time. There are still some core compromises needed: for example, in relation to the requirement for a mandatory data protection officer, the question of consent and other grounds for processing data (in particular legitimate interests for processing), but the position is moving toward a consensus. SC directs State Pollution Control Boards to report on measures to tackle Silicosis
The Supreme Court bench comprising justices Kurian Joseph and Rohinton Fali Nariman on August 23, directed State Pollution Control Boards in Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Pondicherry, Jharkhand and Delhi, to inspect the quartz-grinding units in their States within three weeks.The SPCBs in these States have been especially asked to report on the deficiencies which the Central Pollution Control Board found in such units in Gujarat.The SPCBs have been strictly told to close down units which have not complied with their directions. The chairpersons of these six SPCBs have been asked submit affidavits about the results of their inspections, and actions taken within 10 weeks. In the absence of such affidavits, the chairpersons have been asked to be personally present on their own expense on the next date of hearing.The bench took note of the slew of recommendations of the CPCB to the GPCB, in respect of the quartz grinding units in Gujarat. “Overriding” NGT’s 4-day-old order, SC directs to impose Rs 700 –Rs 1,300 pollution tax on trucks entering Delhi
The Supreme Court today directed the Delhi government and the MCD to levy an Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) ranging from Rs 700 to Rs 1,300 on commercial vehicles, largely trucks, entering the capital and cause pollution.A three judge special bench of Chief Justice H L Dattu, and Justices Arun Mishra and Adarsh Kumar Goel ordered that the charge should be levied on all commercial vehicles entering Delhi from November 1 on a trial basis for four months. It has been fixed as Rs 700 for light vehicles and 2 axle trucks and Rs 1, 300 for 3 axle trucks and 4 axle trucks and above.Passenger vehicles, ambulances and those carrying essential commodities like food items, fuel and m ilk to be exempted. The Supreme Court bench of Justices Madan B.Lokur, S.Abdul Nazeer and Deepak Gupta, on October 5, dismissed the writ petition filed by the Consortium of Indian Farmers Association, seeking directions to the Government to implement the National Policy for Farmers-2007, framed by the Union Ministry of Agriculture, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. The Policy was laid on the table of Rajya Saha on November 23, 2007 and Lok Sabha on November 26, 2007, and was accepted by the then UPA Government.The Central Government had constituted a National Commission on Farmers in 2004 under the Chairmanship of Sompal, and reconstituted it under the Chairmanship of M.S.Swaminathan. The Commission submitted its final report in October 2006. SC orders Bihar and Chhattisgarh to trace missing children within a month; directs MP Chief Secretary to appear on November 20
A Supreme Court bench comprising of Chief Justice H.L. Dattu, Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Arun Mishra directed the Bihar and Chhattisgarh Governments to trace the missing children in their States within a month. It said that it would take two states at a time to examine whether they have complied with its directions.The Bench showed satisfaction with the efforts taken by the Bihar Government, which traced 169 missing children within a week of the Court’s orders. The State now has an onus of finding the remaining 464 children within 3 weeks.Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar, appearing for Bihar, submitted that in the last one year, 2,874 cases of missing children were registered and 2,241 children were found and 633 are still missing.The Bench also summoned Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh for the State’s failure in finding the missing children.
