Don’t Kill the Voices – Punish the Expression Killers

· December 17, 2014 ·

If message is bad, messenger shall not be killed. Bad reports reflect bad society. By reporting it, a journalist is helping the world to correct itself.  We have a Constitution which guarantees that no person shall be killed without the procedure established by law.  But the lives of journalists are being taken by those who never respect the law.  Leaders who take oath to work according to Constitution established by law, are hand in glove with the thugs and black money launderers in killing the rising voices of journalists against them.Even if a single journalist is murdered it breaches two fundamental rights – Right to life and Right to free of speech and expression.  There are several kinds of killings in India other than murders for gain. Ordinary employees who complain about corruption to higher authorities – the whistle blowers, though they do not publicize their complaints or said anything. Everybody has a right to petition and complain, but they … [Read more...] about Don’t Kill the Voices – Punish the Expression Killers

Defiant Fillon fights to save wobbling presidential bid as pressure mounts

· February 1, 2017 ·

French rightwing candidate Francois Fillon battled to save his scandal-hit presidential bid on Wednesday as disastrous After a week of damaging revelations that the 62-year-old former prime minister employed his family members in parliament, a new poll Wednesday showed him crashing out of the election in April. Fillon has been favourite to be France's next leader since November when he clinched the nomination for the Republicans party, but the survey suggested for the first time he would be defeated in the first round of the election. The main beneficiary from his woes appears to be Emmanuel Macron, the 39-year-old independent centrist who was seen advancing to the second round in May to face far-right leader Marine Le Pen. On Wednesday afternoon Fillon defiantly insisted he would not abandon his presidential bid. "I will be candidate at the presidential election," he said. "When you decide to be a presidential candidate, you can't complain … [Read more...] about Defiant Fillon fights to save wobbling presidential bid as pressure mounts

The Rule of Law and Human Rights in India

· October 1, 2015 ·

I am privileged to be given this opportunity to present the Second H.R. Khanna Memorial Lecture.I remember the days of Emergency when we, the public, were very unaware of what was happening as there was total censorship of newspapers.During the height of emergency, the people of the country were wholly unaware of what was happening in regard to the challenges which would have an impact upon the future of the country. During these times, I myself had appeared in various political detention matters in the Karnataka High Court and in matters such as the dismissal of the Karunanidhi Government on 31st January, 1976 just before the General Elections were to be held in Tamil Nadu State, really with intention of eliminating the political rival in the State. If any attempt was made by newspaper to publish any of the news relating to challenges to the Central Government, the censure would straightway cut it out and there would be a white blank triangle, square or rectangle where the news would … [Read more...] about The Rule of Law and Human Rights in India

Uncertainty as Contractor tells SC it cannot collect Pollution Tax from Delhi Trucks

· November 16, 2015 ·

In a surprising move, the toll levy contractor SMYR consortium today appeared before Supreme Court and expressed inability to make the collection of environment compensation charge imposed by the apex court on polluting commercial vehicles entering Delhi citing several problems including financial loss.Making its points clear through senior lawyer Shyam Divan who represented them, SMYR requested the court to  recall its October 9 order for levy of Rs 700 and Rs 1,300 from commercial vehicles or allow it to opt out of the tax collection job.The company said such a direction should not have been passed without giving it a hearing as it had several repercussions and a huge duty had been cast on it which could even lead to massive financial losses to it.The submissions came after the bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu took serious note of SMYR’s refusal to collect environment compensation charge from November 1 to 6 and threatened contempt of court action if it continued to … [Read more...] about Uncertainty as Contractor tells SC it cannot collect Pollution Tax from Delhi Trucks
