When is Father’s Day 2018 around the world, why do the dates differ and what are the celebration’s origins?

· June 14, 2018 ·

THIS weekend sees the arrival of Father's Day - that annual event when dads get the rare chance to be spoiled. We've already celebrated our mums this year with Mothering Sunday, and dad's special day is on Sunday June 17! Here’s all you need to know... What is the history of Father's Day? Father's Day is rumoured to have started when a young woman wanted to honour her war hero dad. In May 1909, Sonora Dodd sat in church listening to a moving Mother's Day sermon. She then decided she wanted to designate a special day just for her dad, William Jackson Smart. Dodd's mother had died in childbirth and her Civil War veteran dad had raised five kids on his own. The following year, she wanted to celebrate Father's Day on June 5th, her father's birthday. Supreme Court Structural and Jurisprudential Problems

The First V.R. Krishna Iyer Memorial National Law Lecture delivered by Hon’ble Justice J.Chelameshwar on November 28, 2015 at Kochi. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am before you overwhelmed by emotions, which are conflicting. It is a singular honour to be called upon to deliver the ‘First V.R. Krishna Iyer Memorial Law Lecture.’ But, at the same time, the very fact that I have to come back for a memorial lecture within a year after attending Justice Iyer’s 100th Birthday Celebrations stirs in me conflicting emotions. That Justice Iyer is no more with us makes me sad in spite of the knowledge that everything in this universe is transient. However, a 100-year life span is an extra-ordinary gift of nature to a very few human beings. Justice Iyer was one of them. May be he transited from ASAT to SAT.To make any attempt to extol the great accomplishments of the multifaceted personality of Justice Iyer would be a reckless adventure for somebody like me. To the best of my … [Read more...] about Supreme Court Structural and Jurisprudential Problems

Defining “Journalist”: Whether and How A Federal Reporter’s Shield Law Should Apply to Bloggers

· March 16, 2011 ·

In 2005, New York Times reporter Judith Miller garnered national attention for her refusal to disclose the identity of her source outing Valerie Plame Wilson as an operative of the Central Intelligence Agency. The D.C. Circuit rejected Miller’s claim that the identity of the source was protected by a reporter’s privilege. Her refusal to comply with a grand jury subpoena meant she was in contempt of court, and she spent eighty-five days in jail as a result.[1]While Miller’s case reignited the public debate of the merits of a reporter’s privilege, the current issue for state and federal courts is defining the scope of the reporter’s shield law. Generally, areporter’s shield law is a “statutory privilege which allows a news gatherer to decline to reveal sources of information”[2]  and newsgathering materials. Like the attorney/client and doctor/patient privileges, the reporter’s privilege attempts to foster the flow of information … [Read more...] about Defining “Journalist”: Whether and How A Federal Reporter’s Shield Law Should Apply to Bloggers

Former first lady Barbara Bush dead at age 92

· April 16, 2018 ·

HOUSTON (AP) — Barbara Bush, the first lady whose plainspoken manner and utter lack of pretense made her more popular at times than her husband, President George H.W. Bush, died Tuesday. She was 92.Family spokesman Jim McGrath confirmed the death in a statement. The cause wasn't immediately known.Mrs. Bush brought a grandmotherly style to buttoned-down Washington, often appearing in her trademark fake pearl chokers and displaying no vanity about her white hair and wrinkles."What you see with me is what you get. I'm not running for president — George Bush is," she said at the 1988 Republican National Convention, where her husband, then vice president, was nominated to succeed Ronald Reagan. The Bushes, who were married Jan. 6, 1945, had the longest marriage of any presidential couple in American history. And Mrs. Bush was one of only two first ladies who had a child who was elected president. The other was Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams and mother of John Quincy Adams."I … [Read more...] about Former first lady Barbara Bush dead at age 92

· April 23, 2018 ·

Flight records show that the plane President Donald Trump used to fly to Moscow in 2013 spent nearly 48 hours in the city.Trump told former FBI Director James Comey, according to his memos, that he did not stay overnight in Moscow. The trip in question was referenced in an infamous dossier about Trump's alleged ties to Russia. It alleged Trump of being present for a lewd sexual act involving prostitutes and urination in a hotel in Moscow.Flight records obtained by Bloomberg shed new light on President Donald Trump's heavily scrutinized 2013 trip to Moscow for the Miss Universe pageant — and they seem to contradict what Trump told former FBI Director James Comey, according to his memos.According to those memos, Trump told the then-FBI director that he never spent the night in Moscow during the trip. Last January, Comey wrote that Trump said he arrived the morning of the pageant and departed back for New York the same night. In February, Comey wrote that Trump told him "he hadn't … [Read more...] about Flight records obtained by Bloomberg shed new light on Trump’s heavily scrutinized Moscow trip
