The average cost for a Thanksgiving dinner has dropped about 1.5 percent from last year, according to a report from Bloomberg Intelligence, with discount chains Aldi and Lidl offering the best savings of the 15 retailers surveyed. The cheapest dinner, based on a basket of 20 items including a 12-pound turkey, potatoes, corn and green beans, can be purchased at Aldi, for a total of $35.83. Lidl follows at $43.31. For hosts with long guest lists, receipts for warehouse clubs BJ's, Sam's Club and Costco are 1.3 percent lower than last year. Adjust for standard supermarket sizes, and all had lower totals than Walmart and Target, whose receipts totaled at $58.94 and $64.97, respectively. Bernie Sanders called on the fast-food chain to follow in Amazon.com Inc.'s footsteps and boost its minimum wage. "If McDonald's raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour and respected the constitutional rights of your workers to form a union, it would set an example for the entire fast food industry to follow," the Vermont senator wrote in a letter to the company's chief executive officer, which he posted to his Twitter account on Thursday. The restaurant chain's shares pared earlier gains following the tweet, briefly turning negative for the day before reversing course. Shares were trading up 0.2 percent as of 2:23 p.m. in New York.
