Brexit and International Policy DevelopmentsThe usual quiet of Brussels’ August recess was disturbed by the arrival, in the middle of the month, of a flurry of position papers from the British government.The two most important of these dealt with the EU’s customs union and the border between Northern Ireland and the republic of Ireland.  According to the customs union paper, the UK would leave the existing EU customs union, maintain a “close association” for a limited period, and then seek either a new customs border with the EU, with border “facilitations” to reduce and remove trade barriers, or a “new customs partnership,” aligning the EU and the British approach to customs.  This would allow the suppression of the customs border between Northern Ireland and the republic of Ireland, thereby solving the Irish border problem.  In the interim, Britain would seek new trade agreements with third countries.These proposals were … [Read more...] about EU Policy Update, September 2017

BIO Issues Call For Panel Session Proposals For 2017 World Congress On Industrial Biotechnology

Increased Franchisor Liability Likely Under New Laws: Franchisor Update May 2017

Many franchisors and other participants in the franchising sector are anticipating with concern the outcome of The Fair Work Amendment (Protecting Vulnerable Workers) Bill 2017 (Bill) which was introduced into the Federal Parliament on 1 March 2017 and referred to the Senate Education and Legislation Committee on 23 March 2017. The Committee briefly accepted public submissions until 6 April 2017 and held public hearings on 12 and 13 April 2017.Assuming that this Bill passes into law, new liability for franchisors will now be created in relation to the underpayment or non-payment of franchisee staff members. SummaryThis past week was a plenary week in the European Parliament, during which many significant initiatives were adopted by the Parliament.Last Tuesday, MEPs approved new EU-wide rules for shopping online, in an attempt to protect consumers against fraud and to stop rogue traders in a more efficient manner. Through the revised Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) regulation, national enforcement authorities will gain increased capabilities to detect and stop breaches of consumer protection laws online. The coordination between EU Member States will also be improved.On the same day, MEPs debated the “Paradise Papers”, the latest leak of documents that show how individuals seek to minimise their tax liabilities.
