EU Weekly Data Privacy Alert – 23 November 2015

· November 25, 2015 ·

EUGeneral Data Protection Regulation Discussion BroadcastThe Assistant European Data Protection Supervisor and the Rapporteur for the Data Protection Regulation have discussed the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). They noted that the timeline that had been set for the end of 2015 was nearing, but there was optimism that there could be political agreement in this time. There are still some core compromises needed: for example, in relation to the requirement for a mandatory data protection officer, the question of consent and other grounds for processing data (in particular legitimate interests for processing), but the position is moving toward a consensus. All parties foresee that the implementation period will be two years once the regulation is finalised.EU Agency for Fundamental Rights Report on SurveillanceThe EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) has published its report focussing on the legal framework governing surveillance by intelligence powers. When Global Families Fail

· July 1, 2010 ·

Note: This month’s CLE, “Family Law Goes Global,” is Wednesday, July 21.Christopher Savoie got the kind of telephone call that terrifies a parent on Aug. 12, 2008. The school where his two young children attended classes wanted him to know that they had not shown up that day.But Savoie’s first thought was not that Isaac and Rebecca had been victimized by some stranger. Instead, he rushed over to his ex-wife’s home not far from his in the Nashville, Tenn., suburbs. “The first thing that came to mind was murder-suicide,” he says. “It was a horrible thing to imagine. I’d had no contact with her in two days, and that wasn’t normal.”Savoie found his ex-wife’s house empty and the blinds drawn. That’s when another explanation for the children’s disappearance began to worry him.For months, Savoie had been telling people—including the judges overseeing the couple’s divorce—that he feared his … [Read more...] about When Global Families Fail

We bought Dennis Nilsen’s murder home where serial killer stashed 12 bodies under floor – and for a cut price

· May 17, 2018 ·

IT is one of the most notorious addresses in Britain — the Cricklewood flat where serial killer Dennis Nilsen stashed a dozen victims under the floorboards. The monster — who died on Saturday aged 72 — had sex with rotting corpses that he kept for months at his maggot-infested House of Horrors in Melrose Avenue in suburban North London. Today it looks much the same from the street — but inside it is unrecognisable after being given a stunning Grand Designs-style makeover by its new owners. Undaunted first-time buyers Bruno and Mathilde were not put off by its grisly past and have transformed it into their dream home — and now plan to start a family there. They even grow fruit and vegetables in the garden where Nilsen once burned piles of corpses and raked the bones into the soil. And they're planning plan to host a World Cup barbecue this summer. NHS manager Bruno, 38, admits many people would run a mile when they found out the … [Read more...] about We bought Dennis Nilsen’s murder home where serial killer stashed 12 bodies under floor – and for a cut price

A Tribute to Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer

· June 16, 2015 ·

Justice Krishna Iyer, in whose demise the Indian Bar lost a towering and somewhat mythical figure in the legal profession was a remarkable multifaceted personality, having experienced life from varied angles – as a lawyer practicing for a number of years in a Sub-Court at Tellichery, thereafter, at the High Court of Kerala, then as a Minister of the legendary first Communist Government of Kerala headed by E. M. S. Namboodiripad, as Member of the Law Commission of India, and finally as a judge of the Supreme Court of India. Just short of a century he departed for his heavenly abode on December 5, 2014, without a moment of rest from the overpowering concern about humanity. The first encounter of one of the authors, Salman Khurshid, with Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer was as a young lecturer at Oxford University in the late 1970s. It was a gloomy and wet autumn morning when a lawyer friend Javed Gaya from Worchester College knocked on his study door and asked whether he would like to … [Read more...] about A Tribute to Justice V.
