Rep. Liz Cheney Loses Primary To Trump-Backed Challenger Harriet Hageman
Republican Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney lost her Tuesday primary challenge from Harriet Hageman, less than a year-and-a-half after she was removed from House GOP leadership for her continued criticisms of former President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. Cheney was one of ten Republicans to vote to impeach Trump in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, and one of two Republicans appointed by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to sit on the Select Committee investigating the riot. She is the fourth Republican who voted to impeach Trump to lose their primary, joining South Carolina Rep. Tom Rice, Michigan Rep. Peter Meijer, and Washington Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler. China’s One-Child Policy Brings the Challenge of an Aging Population
April 25: An elderly Chinese man talks to a child on a street of Daxing district in Beijing, China. China's population is aging rapidly and half the people now live in cities, the government said Thursday, April 28, 2011. The data from a national census carried out late last year will fuel debate about whether China should continue with its "one-child" policy, experts said. It’s a problem that some Asian countries, including Japan, have already faced, and one that is causing persistent struggles as economies continue to stagnate. While it doesn’t seem a problem on the scale of the economic difficulties being faced in the United States right now, it could well have much greater consequences for the world in the longer term. China has created the problem in part, themselves, through its strict one-child policy for families. Its argument has always been … [Read more...] about China’s One-Child Policy Brings the Challenge of an Aging Population

DeSantis’ chances of beating Trump in Florida for 2024 GOP nomination: Poll
A new poll shows Ron DeSantis is virtually tied with former President Donald Trump among Florida Republican voters in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup, fueling speculation Florida's governor could potentially compete with Trump for the party's presidential nomination in 2024. Released on August 16, the University of North Florida (UNF) poll showed DeSantis with a two-point lead over Trump among registered Republican voters in the state, with just 7 percent of voters saying they'd vote for someone else. While other polls have directly compared Trump and DeSantis—a rising star in the GOP who has modeled his political brand after Trump's—the UNF poll appears to be the first public example of DeSantis' viability in his home state in a head-to-head contest for the presidency against the man who is still widely considered the head of the modern Republican Party. Though DeSantis was handily defeated by Trump in a straw poll of CPAC attendees this month, a recent Suffolk … [Read more...] about DeSantis’ chances of beating Trump in Florida for 2024 GOP nomination: Poll

The spectrum of law-making in independent India
In India, Parliament is the supreme law-making body. With the exceptions of items reserved unto the people — by the virtue of Fundamental Rights — and items reserved unto the States by the virtue of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution, Parliament can make laws on virtually any subject within India’s territory, and, in exceptional cases, extra-territorially. The Preamble lists the objectives of the Constitution to secure for all citizens justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. Undeterred by India’s deep-seated inequalities and factionalism before and at the time of Independence, the framers of the Constitution undertook a leap of faith and envisioned a liberal, more egalitarian nation-state in the post-colonial world. Building blocks of the Nehruvian years The first government led by Jawaharlal Nehru inherited a copious body of constitutional, substantive, and procedural laws made between the early 1800s to 1947, and a trained bureaucracy to administer them. In his first … [Read more...] about The spectrum of law-making in independent India
Trump Critic Republican Liz Cheney Loses Congress Seat to Conspiracy Theorist Chosen by Former Prez
Republican rebel Liz Cheney lost her seat in Congress Tuesday to an election conspiracy theorist, US media projected, in the latest sign of her party’s break with traditional conservatism to embrace Donald Trump’s hardline “America First” agenda. Once considered Republican royalty, the lawmaker from Wyoming has become a pariah in the party over her membership of the congressional panel investigating the January 6 assault on the US Capitol — and Trump’s role in fanning the flames. Defeat for the 56-year-old elder daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney in the Wyoming Republican primary marks the end of the family’s four-decade political association with one of America’s most conservative states. The Republican nomination to contest November’s midterms instead goes to 59-year-old lawyer Harriet Hageman — Trump’s hand-picked candidate who has amplified his false claims of a “rigged” 2020 election. But there is already speculation that Cheney may challenge Trump for the … [Read more...] about Trump Critic Republican Liz Cheney Loses Congress Seat to Conspiracy Theorist Chosen by Former Prez
