As Rep. Liz Cheney made her high-minded pronouncements about the importance of truth and courage and genuine patriotism during the congressional hearing into the Jan. 6 insurrection, she was shadowed by a question that fairness left largely unspoken. “What about your freaking father?” But one of the propelling principles of the hearing-turned-reality-show was justice. And to have held former Vice President Dick Cheney’s lies and cowardice against her would have been blaming the child for the sins of the father. Then, two weeks after the final, prime-time hearing in which Liz Cheney declared, “We must remember that we cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation,” she posted a campaign ad featuring her dad. “He is a coward,” Dick Cheney said of Donald Trump . “A real man wouldn’t lie to his supporters.” That from a man who had lied the whole country into the war in Iraq, killing thousands and costing us the sense of unity and purpose inspired by the actual … [Read more...] about Liz Cheney Championed the Truth and Then Embraced a Liar—Her Dad
2015 gay marriage
“After my uncle died, we discovered the truth about his life”
I was writing my uncle Tom's obituary when a roundabout request appeared in my cell phone messages. "I have no agenda and do not want there to be any unpleasantness; I can keep quiet— but wanted you to know that Tom and I got married back in 2016. Hadn't ever been that big of a deal to us, but we were so upset over Trump's election, we wanted to do something in protest." "Well congrats four years late!" I texted back. There wasn't much more to say about a wedding announcement that arrives after one spouse passed away. I set to editing. I'd included my uncle's partner in the draft already, weighed how to describe him, a man who lived with my uncle and, in his old age, became his caretaker. I had inserted the catch-all of "partner" because that's what you do when there's an intimate relationship that everyone knows about but no one has discussed. It certainly wrong-footed me at that moment. Throughout most of his marriage to his wife, everyone knew my uncle was married to a woman … [Read more...] about “After my uncle died, we discovered the truth about his life”
North Dakota schools aim to recruit Florida teachers over DeSantis bill
Amid mounting uncertainty over Florida's recently passed "Don't Say Gay" legislation , a school district far to the north is offering teachers an alternative. On Tuesday, a letter began circulating on social media which showed the Fargo Public Schools district in Fargo, North Dakota , offering Florida teachers a more welcoming alternative. Fargo is the largest city in North Dakota by population, and the district sending the letter is the third-largest in the state, with roughly 11,300 students. "You don't know us, so we'll start with this important statement," the letter, addressed to teachers in Florida, began. "We are way OK with saying gay, or straight, or LGBTQ+. Though we have a long way to go to become a fully inclusive community, we believe it is an injustice to diminish any individual's gender identity in any way. People should be welcomed to show up as their authentic selves!" The letter was authored by district Superintendent Dr. Rupak Gandhi, Director of Equity and … [Read more...] about North Dakota schools aim to recruit Florida teachers over DeSantis bill

The spectrum of law-making in independent India
In India, Parliament is the supreme law-making body. With the exceptions of items reserved unto the people — by the virtue of Fundamental Rights — and items reserved unto the States by the virtue of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution, Parliament can make laws on virtually any subject within India’s territory, and, in exceptional cases, extra-territorially. The Preamble lists the objectives of the Constitution to secure for all citizens justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. Undeterred by India’s deep-seated inequalities and factionalism before and at the time of Independence, the framers of the Constitution undertook a leap of faith and envisioned a liberal, more egalitarian nation-state in the post-colonial world. Building blocks of the Nehruvian years The first government led by Jawaharlal Nehru inherited a copious body of constitutional, substantive, and procedural laws made between the early 1800s to 1947, and a trained bureaucracy to administer them. In his first … [Read more...] about The spectrum of law-making in independent India
Boycott Bollywood: Could Daily Twitter Outrage Really Kill Hindi Cinema?
Boycott Laal Singh Chaddha. Boycott Pathaan. Boycott Vikram Vedha. Boycott Brahmastra. Boycott Bollywood. Here’s a fun equation to predict future trends on desi social media– “Boycott” + “Insert movie name” = New Twitter trend. Perhaps not so much fun if you are an ardent Bollywood fan or an employee in the Hindi film industry. Social media, since its inception, has dimmed the starry look in the eyes of fans who once considered superstars as some mystical, invincible beings. One had to flip through pages of magazines and newspapers to catch a tiny glimpse of the world of the larger-than-life stars. These actors are all over social media now. Their “online” status has made them more human. Responding to admirers has, in a way, deflated their stature. “Cancelling” and “boycotting” them has never been easier. Add past statements, movie clippings, or opinions of said actors to the mix that do not align with the worldview of these “boycotters” ahead of a movie release, and voila, you … [Read more...] about Boycott Bollywood: Could Daily Twitter Outrage Really Kill Hindi Cinema?
If You Must Defend Mindless Bollywood ‘Masala’, Do It Like Boman Irani
Let's admit it, Boman Irani isn't your ordinary hero. Perhaps that's what makes his interview on the Rajya Sabha TV 's show "Guftagoo" a fantastic watch. The interview reveals the actor's extraordinary and arduous journey before marking his arrival in the industry with his role as Dr. Asthana in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003). Known for his comic and villainous roles, Irani entered the industry at a "ripe" age of 35 and has since appeared in several successful outings such as Darna Mana Hai (2003), Main Hoon Na (2004), Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006), Don (2006), 3 Idiots (2009), Jolly LLB (2013). (Photo credits: Ram Gopal Varma) But before all the success that came his way, he worked as a waiter and room service with Taj Palace Hotel. He then went on to spend 12 years of his life at his family shop to sell wafers when he, one day, thought of turning his passion for photography into a full-time profession. During the interview, Irani … [Read more...] about If You Must Defend Mindless Bollywood ‘Masala’, Do It Like Boman Irani
Walmart tops Q2 expectations as Americans continue spending
NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart reported better-than-expected second quarter results as more Americans looked to cut costs on groceries at the nation's largest retailer in the face of surging inflation. Those rising prices, however, meant that customers where cutting back on non-necessary purchases. Walmart Inc. earned $5.15 billion, or $1.88 per share, or $1.77 excluding one-time costs and charges. That easily beat the $1.62 per share that Wall Street was looking for, according to FactSet. It also topped last year's profit of $4.27 billion. Sales rose 8.4% to $152.86 billion, topping industry analyst projections. Sales at stores open at least a year rose 6.5% as more shoppers turned to Walmart for groceries. That followed a 3% increase in the first quarter. Online sale rose 12%, following a 1% increase in the previous quarter. “We’re pleased to see more customers choosing Walmart during this inflationary period, and we’re working hard to support them as they prioritize … [Read more...] about Walmart tops Q2 expectations as Americans continue spending
