President Donald Trump is considering an Army veteran who is a Republican member of Congress for the position of Veterans Affairs secretary, part of a lengthening search for a nominee following the abrupt firing of David Shulkin in March. A White House official on Thursday said Rep. Brian Mast of Florida, who was elected to the House in 2016, was among the list of candidates for the job heading an agency of 360,000 employees serving 9 million veterans. The White House official would not say if Mast is the leading candidate for the VA position. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. Mast is the first member of Congress to open a lawmaker satellite office in a VA facility, setting up shop in the West Palm Beach VA to meet with veterans. He was wounded when serving in Afghanistan in 2010, which resulted in the amputation of both of his legs. Mast, 37, has often voted along with Trump on key issues in Congress, more recently announcing he supported … [Read more...] about Trump Considering Wounded Army Veteran Brian Mast for VA Secretary

Establishment Republicans are fearing recent polling suggesting Don Blankenship, using targeted attacks on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky, is surging ahead of Tuesday's primary for the GOP Senate candidacy to oppose Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., according to Politico. Blankenship has reportedly narrowly moved ahead of mainstream GOP opponents, Rep. Evan Jenkins and West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey. The fears lie not only in the opposition to McConnell, but the possibility a Republican will not be able to overtake the incumbent Democrat Manchin in a Senate majority so narrowly held by the GOP 51-49 heading into the November midterms. Blankenship's GOP in-fighting attacks on McConnell include a TV commercial labeling McConnell "Cocaine Mitch," and claims McConnell's wife has ties to China, with Blankenship saying, according to Politico: McConnell's "China family has given him tens of millions of dollars." Also, Blankenship is not the opposition-proof candidate … [Read more...] about Politico: GOP Establishment Fears Blankenship Surge in W.Va.
Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., was a possible candidate for Veteran Affairs secretary after former White House physician Ronny Jackson withdrew his name from consideration, The Washington Post reported. The White House courted Manchin in hopes of clearing the way for Republicans to win his seat in the deep-red state, concerned the conservative Democrat would get re-elected despite President Donald Trump’s high poll numbers in West Virginia, the Post reported. Manchin is set to go up against West Virginia’s Republican attorney general Patrick Morrisey in November. No formal offer was made to Manchin for the VA post, the Post reported, citing unnamed White House and congressional officials. Manchin told the Post he viewed the discussions as being about how to find the best person for the VA — not filling the spot himself. But White House officials said they specifically asked Manchin about leading the VA and believed he was interested, the Post reported. Several days of … [Read more...] about Sen. Joe Manchin Considered VA Spot After Ronny Jackson’s Withdrawal
Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., holds a 5-point lead over his Republican opponent, Patrick Morrisey, according to two polls released Thursday. In both polls, Manchin outpaced Morrisey with less than half of the voters surveyed. Emerson College found that 47 percent support Manchin and 42 percent back Morrisey with 8 percent undecided; the MetroNews Dominion Post West Virginia Poll has Manchin ahead with 45 percent of voters surveyed, Morrisey lagged behind at 40 percent and 11 percent going to Libertarian candidate Rusty Hollen, with five percent undecided. Rex Repass, pollster and West Virginia Poll author, said, “Probably the race has narrowed for a number of reasons… It could be a higher turnout this year because of just a tremendous amount of interest in the U.S. Senate race in West Virginia,” and “part of that was spurred by the Kavanaugh debate, part was because of President Trump being in the state multiple times for Patrick Morrisey.” The two are set … [Read more...] about 2 Polls Show Manchin Leads Morrissey in W.Va.
