17 States Sue Feds Over Endangered Species Act Rules

· September 25, 2019 ·

Seventeen states sued the Trump administration Wednesday to block rules weakening the Endangered Species Act, saying the changes would make it tougher to protect wildlife even in the midst of a global extinction crisis. The lawsuit, in federal court in San Francisco, follows a similar challenge filed last month by several environmental groups, including the Humane Society and the Sierra Club. The new rules begin taking effect Thursday. They for the first time allow officials to consider how much it would cost to save a species. They also remove blanket protections for animals newly listed as threatened and make it easier for creatures to be removed from the protected list. "It's a death by a thousand cuts for the Endangered Species Act," Democratic Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson told a Seattle news conference announcing the lawsuit. Climate change activist Greta Thunberg, 16, spoke at the United Nations Climate Change Action Summit on Monday. Judge Says Trump Administration Has To Hand Over More Information About Census Citizenship Question

· July 3, 2018 ·

By Sam Levine NEW YORK — A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to disclose more information about its decision to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census — a small victory for challengers who say adding the question was illegal and officials have not fully disclosed how the decision to include it was made. U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman on Tuesday said government lawyers have to produce a log of all the documents it was withholding and an explanation for why it was doing so. He also ordered the government to add documents from the Commerce and Justice departments explaining the decisions and said he would allow depositions of up to 10 people from both departments. The decision came in a lawsuit filed on behalf of New York, 17 other states and nine cities challenging … [Read more...] about Judge Says Trump Administration Has To Hand Over More Information About Census Citizenship Question

Trump Administration’s Justification For Adding A Census Citizenship Question Is Unraveling

· July 24, 2018 ·

POLITICS 07/24/2018 04:08 pm ET Updated 34 minutes ago New documents show Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross wanted to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census months before there was a formal request. By Sam Levine Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross had a significant interest in adding a question asking about citizenship to the 2020 census months before the Department of Justice asked him to do so, newly disclosed documents show. The documents further undermine the Trump administration’s claim that it is adding the question to the 2020 census so the Department of Justice can better enforce the 1965 Voting Rights Act. While the census currently asks about citizenship on the American Community Survey, which goes out to over 3.5 million households each year, it has not asked about citizenship on the decennial census, which goes to every American household, since 1950. In testimony before Congress and in an official memo announcing the decision in March, Ross … [Read more...] about Trump Administration’s Justification For Adding A Census Citizenship Question Is Unraveling
