The first time British singer Rick Astley was introduced to what would become his smash pop hit, 1987's "Never Gonna Give You Up," was when Mike Stock of the production team Stock Aitken Waterman sang the song's melody and worked out the chords in the recording studio. At the time, Astley was not only a signed artist to SAW but also served as their tea boy—a sort of apprentice or intern who did odd jobs for them. "I'm literally brewing the coffee while this is happening," Astley tells Newsweek . "I kind of thought, 'Oh that's interesting,' because it's super catchy. As I heard it being built, I said to myself, 'If I was in a club with my friends, I'd dance to that.'" Released 35 years ago, "Never Gonna Give You Up," which appeared on Astley's debut album Whenever You Need Somebody , became the blue-eyed soul singer's first No. 1 smash in the U.S., followed by the hit singles "Together Forever" and "It Would Take a Strong Strong Man." Why You Should Befriend the People You Admire
“ How to Build a Life ” is a weekly column by Arthur Brooks, tackling questions of meaning and happiness. Click here to listen to his podcast series on all things happiness, How to Build a Happy Life . W hen you’re admired and well known, “people are always nice to you,” the actor Robert De Niro once confessed to Esquire magazine. “You’re in a conversation, and everybody’s agreeing with what you’re saying.” Sounds great! Agreement makes life smooth, and the praise and esteem of others gives us pleasure, even stimulating a reward center in our brain. Wanting to surround ourselves with admirers, if we can, is only natural. But in his interview, De Niro clarified exactly what a life filled with admirers can mean. Admirers agree with you “even if you say something totally crazy.” And that’s bad: “You need people who can tell you what you don’t want to hear,” he said. In other words, the admiration of others can be a double-edged sword. Being admired for our … [Read more...] about Why You Should Befriend the People You Admire
‘My daughter won’t invite my wife to her wedding – so I’ve stopped funding it’
When it comes to planning who you'd like to invite to your wedding , the choice is wholly between you and your partner - and you shouldn't be forced into inviting anyone you don't want to. But for one bride, denying one person entry to her wedding means she will have to start funding the ceremony herself, as her dad has decided to pull support as a result of her choice. Posting on Reddit , the 58-year-old dad explained that he has been paying for his daughter's wedding in instalments, but recently discovered that his wife isn't invited to the special day. And after trying to convince his 27-year-old daughter to reconsider, she told him that the wedding is for "real family" only - even though her mum's boyfriend is invited. No star, no problem: Rogue planets could incubate life for billions of years
Scientists once assumed that the best place to look for extraterrestrial life would be planets within their star ’s habitable, or “Goldilocks” zone, that narrow range of orbits where water remains liquid on a planet ’s surface. Around our Sun , the habitable zone stretches from just outside the orbit of Venus to just outside the orbit of Mars, with Earth squarely in the middle. But new research suggests scientists searching for habitable planets should look outside habitable zones — way outside. In a paper published Monday in the journal Nature astronomy, researchers from the universities of Bern and Zurich conclude that certain super Earth exoplanets — rocky planets between 2 and 10 times Earth’s mass — could remain habitable for forms of life at distances 10 times that of Earth from the Sun. Some planets could even remain habitable for tens of billions of years after getting expelled from their solar system, becoming strange oases wandering interstellar … [Read more...] about No star, no problem: Rogue planets could incubate life for billions of years
TS SSC Results 2022 Declared: Pass Percentage at Three-Year Low, Special Classes to Fill Learning Gaps
Of the 5,03,570 students who registered to appear for the Telangana 10th exams, as many as 4,53,201 students have passed. The pass percentage is the lowest in three years, with as many as 90% of students passing the TS SSC. Not only is there a drop of a huge 10 percentage points when compared with last year when all 100% of students were promoted but also the pass percentage has dipped from 2019 – when the TSBSE had held board exams last. Since for the past two years, the Telangana Board is not conducting exams, the result seems to have mirrored the reality of learning among students after two years of school shut down and online classes. The Telangana Board has decided to hold two hours of daily classes for students who have failed. This is aimed at covering up the learning losses. For students who could not clear their exams, advanced supplementary exams will be held from August 1 to August 10. Girls Performed Better Than Boys Gender-wise, girls have performed better than … [Read more...] about TS SSC Results 2022 Declared: Pass Percentage at Three-Year Low, Special Classes to Fill Learning Gaps
