Supreme Court strikes New York gun law, expanding gun rights

June 23, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The Supreme Court said Thursday that Americans have a right to carry guns in public, a major expansion of gun rights. The justices’ 6-3 decision follows a series of recent mass shootings and is expected to ultimately allow more people to legally carry guns on the streets of the nation’s largest cities — including New York, Los Angeles and Boston — and elsewhere. About a quarter of the U.S. population lives in states expected to be affected by the ruling, the high court’s first major gun decision in more than a decade. The ruling comes as Congress is actively working on gun legislation following recent mass shootings in Texas, New York and California. Nolte: Abortion, Gun Rulings Are Civil Rights Victories That Will Save Lives

June 25, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

Overturning Roe v. Wade and declaring New York’s fascist conceal carry law unconstitutional are not only progress for the cause of human and civil rights–they will also save countless innocent lives. It need not be pointed out how this week’s 5-4 Supreme Court decision concerning Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization finally ended the moral and legal atrocity of Roe v. Wade or how it will save lives. The slaughter of innocent, unborn babies will end in any number of states, come under heavy restrictions in others, and likely save millions of lives. Unfortunately, this mass butchering will likely continue in the demonic blue states. Out of defiance, it might even increase. Overall, though, the infanticide numbers will almost certainly decrease. And those numbers are almost too horrific to comprehend. Since Roe became the law of the land in 1973, 63 million innocent babies have been slaughtered. Sixty-three million lives were snuffed out, almost all for … [Read more...] about Nolte: Abortion, Gun Rulings Are Civil Rights Victories That Will Save Lives

Biden signs landmark gun measure, says ‘lives will be saved’

June 25, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

President Joe Biden on Saturday signed the most sweeping gun violence bill in decades, a bipartisan compromise that seemed unimaginable until a recent series of mass shootings, including the massacre of 19 students and two teachers at a Texas elementary school . “Lives will be saved,” he said at the White House. Citing the families of shooting victims, the President said, “Their message to us was to do something. Well today, we did.” The House gave final approval on Friday, following Senate passage on Thursday , and Mr. Biden acted just before leaving Washington for two summits in Europe. The legislation will toughen background checks for the youngest gun buyers, keep firearms from more domestic violence offenders and help states put in place red flag laws that make it easier for authorities to take weapons from people adjudged to be dangerous. The Supreme Court prompts the question: Who gets rights in America?

June 25, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 Amy Martin was 14 years old when Roe v. Wade was decided, establishing a right to abortion that she took for granted for nearly five decades. Martin was 56 when the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in 2015, a right she took advantage of when she married her partner of 30 years last year. And when the court overturned that first decision on Friday, with Justice Clarence Thomas writing in his opinion that the court should next reexamine cases granting LGBTQ rights, Martin found herself seized with new terror that the second one could also fall. "What if gay marriage is the next thing?" said Martin, 63, who recently retired from her job at a Cleveland law office, and whose health-care benefits come from her wife's policy. "The fabric of our country and what it's been based on, it's fraying." As the implications of the court's abortion decision continued to … [Read more...] about The Supreme Court prompts the question: Who gets rights in America?

Department Of Justice Denounces Supreme Court Ruling On Guns

June 23, 2022 by dailycaller.com

The Department of Justice (DOJ) released a statement Thursday disagreeing with the Supreme Court’s ruling in a case involving a New York concealed carry law. “We respectfully disagree with the Court’s conclusion that the Second Amendment forbids New York’s reasonable requirement that individuals seeking to carry a concealed handgun must show that they need to do so for self-defense,” the statement read. Protests and celebrations as Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade: Live updates

June 25, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

Protests continued in cities across the country Saturday after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that had guaranteed the right to abortion in the United States. As states began to enact abortion bans and clinics stopped offering the procedure, large crowds gathered in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, some jubilant, others dismayed at the decision that stripped away women’s constitutional right to abortion. Both sides predicted the fight over abortion would continue. Key highlights: President Joe Biden called it a “sad day” for the U.S. and said it would be up to voters in November to select candidates who would protect a host of rights — not just abortion but also marriage equality and the right to contraception. Centrist Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, suggested they were misled by Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, two key votes in the decision to overturn Roe. June 25, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

Most Americans either “never” wear a mask or only do so “some of the time,” a recent poll from The Economist /YouGov found. The survey asked respondents to reveal their frequency of mask-wearing during the last week. “In the past seven days, how often have you worn a mask on your face when outside your home?” the survey asked. A plurality, 41 percent, said they “never” wear a mask outside of the home, followed by 25 percent who said they do “some of the time.” In all, 66 percent said they either never or sometimes wear a mask outside of the home. On the flip side, 17 percent said they “always” wear a mask, and another 17 percent said they do so “most of the time.” Behaviors are divided on party lines: 57 percent of Republicans say they never wear a mask, while just 22 percent of Democrats say the same. A plurality of independents, 48 percent, also say they never wear a mask. The decrease in mask-wearing coincides with 58 percent across the board expressing the … [Read more...] about Poll: Majority Say Their Either ‘Never’ or Only ‘Sometimes’ Wear a Mask

Rafael Nadal Missing Old Sparring Partner Roger Federer on Wimbledon Return

June 25, 2022 by www.news18.com

Rafa Nadal returns to Wimbledon for the first time in three years but it will feel a little odd for the Spaniard who, for the first time at the All England Club, will not have sparring partner Roger Federer for company. Their epic rivalry includes three successive Wimbledon finals from 2006 — the first two won by Federer and the last by Nadal in unforgettable fashion in 2008. Federer played in the juniors at Wimbledon in 1998 and has been back every year since, winning a record eight titles and establishing himself as the king of the lawns. But the 40-year-old will be absent this year as the 36-year-old Nadal seeks to continue his quest for the calendar year Grand Slam, having won the Australian Open and French Open to take his haul of majors to a record 22. Federer’s absence because of a knee injury that has sidelined him for a year will leave Wimbledon a little empty. Nadal acknowledges that without the Swiss raising the bar, his own achievements might not have been … [Read more...] about Rafael Nadal Missing Old Sparring Partner Roger Federer on Wimbledon Return
