Besides Tejaswin Shankar, AFI Names Sapna Barman, Two Marathoners, One Relay Runner in Additional Five for CWG
High jumper Tejaswin Shankar’s writ petition in the Delhi High Court has led to four more athletes being named by the national federation, though their participation depends on the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) agreeing to increase the allotted quota. During a hearing on a plea by Shankar, a national record holder, challenging his exclusion from the upcoming Birmingham Commonwealth Games (July 28 to August 8) squad, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) informed the court that its selection committee has added five more athletes, subject to IOA agreeing to increase the quota from the current 36. Besides Shankar, the other four athletes are Asian Games gold medallist heptathlete Swapna Barman, marathon runners Srinu Bugatha and Anish Thapa, and Jilna MV for 4x100m relay event. Jilna was originally named in the 37-member team announced on June 16 as a 4x100m relay runner but her name was later withdrawn to stick to the allotted quota of 36. It remains to be seen what the … [Read more...] about Besides Tejaswin Shankar, AFI Names Sapna Barman, Two Marathoners, One Relay Runner in Additional Five for CWG
Island of wet wipes has ‘changed the course of the Thames’ as government considers ban
An island the size of two tennis courts has "changed the course" of the River Thames - and it's made from wet wipes. Campaigners regularly comb through the muck on the riverbank near Hammersmith Bridge, where they find up to 150 wet wipes per square metre. The UK uses 11 billion of the "disposable" products every year, according to Labour MP Fleur Anderson, causing untold problems for the environment and wreaking havoc on plumbing to the tune of £100m in blockages. The government is considering a ban on wet wipes, but Ms Anderson wants the issue resolved faster, and has tabled legislation to bring it about . It comes after Boots pledged to stop selling all wet wipes containing plastic by the end of the year. Advertisement Speaking during a session of questions on the environment, food and rural affairs in the Commons, Ms Anderson told MPs: "Billions of wet wipes containing plastic are still being used across the country, causing environmental … [Read more...] about Island of wet wipes has ‘changed the course of the Thames’ as government considers ban

Srihari Nataraj Registers Best Indian Performance in Swimming World Championships
Ace Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj set ‘Best Indian time’ at the FINA short course World Championship but that was not enough to take him to the semifinals of the 50m backstroke event here on Saturday. The 20-year-old clocked 24.40s in the men’s 50m backstroke event to finish 26th in the overall heats. However, Nataraj, who competed at the Tokyo Games after becoming the second Indian swimmer after Sajan Prakash to breach the ‘A’ qualifying time for the Olympics, was unable to progress to the semifinals where the top 16 swimmers compete. This is Nataraj’s second ‘Best Indian time’ at the meet, the Bengaluru swimmer had bettered his own record in the 100m backstroke event on the opening day. The timings clocked and records in this meet, which is being contested in a 25m swimming pool, are different from the more traditional long course ones.
