Lake Mead is at risk of "catastrophic collapse" if nothing is done to reduce water use at the manmade reservoir that straddles the Arizona/Nevada border, U.S. government officials have warned. Water levels are forecast to drop further before the end of August and measures have been unveiled to minimize damage to the ecosystem and the strain on local communities. According to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Lake Mead's water is 1,042.38 feet above sea level, as of August 16. The USBR predicts the water level will drop to 1,042.35 feet before September. Longer-term USBR forecasts suggest the water level will decline to 1,019 feet by August 2023 and 1,013 feet in July 2024. The USBR is asking people to use as little water as possible and has announced that the reservoir—the largest in the U.S.—will operate under its first Level 2a Shortage Condition in 2023. This means downstream releases from the Hoover Dam will be reduced in 2023 to Arizona, Nevada and Mexico. You Have No Idea How Good Mosquitoes Are at Smelling Us
Nothing gets a female mosquito going quite like the stench of human BO . The chase can begin from more than 100 feet away , with a plume of breath that wafts carbon dioxide onto the nubby sensory organ atop the insect’s mouth. Her senses snared, she flies person-ward, until her antennae start to buzz with the pungent perfume of skin. Lured closer still, she homes in on her host’s body heat, then touches down on a landing pad of flesh that she can taste with her legs . She punctures her victim with her spear-like stylet and slurps the iron-rich blood within. The entire ritual is intricate and obsessive—and nearly impossible to disrupt. Of more than 3,500 mosquito species that skulk about the planet, fewer than 10 percent (and only the females, at that) enjoy nibbling on humans. But once they’re on the prowl for people, neither rain nor zappers nor citronella candles will deter them. From the tips of their antennae to the bottoms of their little insect feet, these … [Read more...] about You Have No Idea How Good Mosquitoes Are at Smelling Us
Sale of Codeine-Based Cough Syrups May Go Through Tough Regulatory Rules After MPs Raise Concerns
The government is reviewing the policy to ban manufacturing and sale of codeine-based cough syrups after several MPs raised concerns that they are being used as narcotic drugs than as medicine. Codeine is an opioid-based analgesic, mostly used to treat coughing, pain and diarrhoea, and it is one of the natural plant alkaloids found in extracts of opium. Based on the request by several politicians to health minister Mansukh Mandaviya to ban cough syrups, a copy of which was accessed by News18.com, the health ministry had asked the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) in March to “conduct a review and submit recommendation”. Recently, the DCGI has submitted its review to the health ministry. “The top selling brands using codeine are Pfizer’s Corex, Abbott’s Phensedyl and Laborate Pharmaceuticals’ Eskuf among a few others,” the government official privy to the development said, adding that “the states where the consumption of these syrups is high include Uttar Pradesh, … [Read more...] about Sale of Codeine-Based Cough Syrups May Go Through Tough Regulatory Rules After MPs Raise Concerns
Turkey’s Erdogan jostles to be Putin’s partner, Ukraine peacemaker
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan heads to Ukraine Thursday as the most likely peacemaker in a war that has pitted NATO and the European Union firmly against Russia. Erdogan and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the western city of Lviv, with the nascent UN-Turkish-facilitated Black Sea grain export deal likely top of the agenda. The Turkish president may also be carrying a message from Russian President Vladimir Putin , who he met in the Black Sea resort town of Sochi earlier this month. Erdogan—now needed by both Ukraine and Russia—may yet play a key role in any eventual ceasefire, though for now an end to the fighting looks unlikely. In the meantime Erdogan—ambitious, opportunistic, and pragmatic—will deal with both sides, seeking to stabilize its region, its beleaguered economy, and grow its international influence. "Turkey is trying to find a middle road," said Fatih Ceylan, … [Read more...] about Turkey’s Erdogan jostles to be Putin’s partner, Ukraine peacemaker
FNC’s Carlson: ‘Inflation Reduction Act May Be a Classic Example of Misinformation’
Wednesday, FNC host Tucker Carlson opened his broadcast with a scathing critique of the so-called Inflation Reduction Act. According to Carlson, the moniker “inflation reduction” was misinformation, which has been something the Biden administration has proclaimed to be a priority in combatting. Transcript as follows: CARLSON: People say the federal government seems big, maybe bigger than ever. Well, it actually is the largest employer in the world — the Federal government. Nothing else comes close — not Google, not Amazon, not the Communist Party of China — nothing. How many people work for the United States government? Let’s put it this way. There are more than a hundred countries around the world whose total populations (that is, every man, woman and child) are smaller than our Federal workforce — entire countries, many of them. The US government, in other words, is astoundingly large, world historically big, scale without precedent, truly gargantuan. So, what do all … [Read more...] about FNC’s Carlson: ‘Inflation Reduction Act May Be a Classic Example of Misinformation’

To swear or not to swear
Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn, said Clarke Gable in Gone With the Wind and walked off into the sunset. Supposing he hadn’t been so frank, would he have said “damn”? “Let’s be clear, my dear, I don’t give it a thought,” is not in the same weight category, nor is “My dear, I can’t be bothered, so let’s finish the movie and go out for dinner”. The point is, swear words have a role to play in life. This was something my teachers in school didn’t understand, making me write “I shall not use foul language” 100 times — or 500 sometimes — if I used the word “bloody”. When you use foul language, they told us, it is a sign that you are of low intelligence, a vulgarian in fact. It shows you can’t think of the right word, that your upbringing is all wrong and your ancestors are disappointed in you. Only idiots use words like that, they said, in case I hadn’t got the message yet. So much anger over such a simple word! I never got such lectures even when I made silly mistakes in … [Read more...] about To swear or not to swear
Felony charges dropped against 87 Breonna Taylor protesters arrested on Kentucky AG’s yard
Felony charges have been dropped against 87 people who were arrested this week on the lawn of Kentucky's attorney general while protesting the response to the death of Breonna Taylor , the top local prosecutor announced Friday. The charge, intimidating a participant in a legal process, was reasonable, Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell said in a statement. But "in the interest of justice and the promotion of the free exchange of ideas, we will dismiss that charge for each protester this past Tuesday," he said. The demonstrators gathered in Louisville, Kentucky, to demand the arrests of three plainclothes officers involved in Taylor's death March 13. Taylor was fatally shot when officers served a "no-knock" warrant at her Louisville home. Her boyfriend, who thought their apartment was being broken into, opened fire, injuring one officer. Taylor, 26, was shot eight times in a hail of return fire. A wrongful death lawsuit filed by Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer, … [Read more...] about Felony charges dropped against 87 Breonna Taylor protesters arrested on Kentucky AG’s yard
Pete Alonso ‘excited’ for opportunity to represent U.S. at next year’s World Baseball Classic
ATLANTA — After this Mets’ season is over, Pete Alonso will briefly wear a different uniform. The Mets’ first baseman will suit up for Team USA at the 2023 World Baseball Classic in March. The tournament, which has been dormant since 2017, pits the United States against the world’s other baseball powerhouses in one of the most unique baseball atmospheres on the planet. “I’m really excited,” Alonso said on Wednesday. “There’s a lot of really amazing guys on the team so far. Again, it’s a great opportunity. I just feel lucky to be a part of it.” Along with Alonso, several other All-Stars are expected to rock the red, white and blue. While nothing is official yet, and things could still change before the tournament actually begins, Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, J.T. Realmuto and Trevor Story are also expected to be on the team. Trout will serve as team captain, though Alonso said it was the larger Team USA governing body that reached out to him about … [Read more...] about Pete Alonso ‘excited’ for opportunity to represent U.S. at next year’s World Baseball Classic
