Susan Tompor Detroit Free Press Published 11:00 p.m. UTC Jul 29, 2018 Could President Donald Trump's mounting trade war end up as the undoing of your 401(k)? When it comes to tariffs, no matter your politics, the risk of owning stocks clearly has gone up. Growing uncertainties surrounding U.S. trade policies could lead to reduced profits for some companies, higher prices for consumers, job losses and at the worst extreme could bring on the next recession. While tariffs protect weaker domestic industries from foreign competition, economists note that trade barriers in the long run can be harmful to growth and we're already hearing warnings from automakers and others. The good news: We're not on the brink yet. Many 401(k) plans aren't feeling much of a pinch. It's been a relatively good summer for stocks. The Dow Jones industrial average closed at 24,753.09 points on May 25, the Friday before Memorial Day. The Dow closed at 25,527.07 … [Read more...] about Will your 401(k) feel the squeeze of higher tariffs?

A HORSE racing fan scooped almost £30,000 off a 1p bet – and will use the huge win to pay off his brother’s mortgage. Derek Marsden, 65, smashed odds of more than a million to one when he picked six out of eight winners at Chester, Limerick, Hexham and Bath. He immediately phoned his brother Andrew, 62, a retired textile factory worker, and told him: “Don’t worry any more, your mortgage is paid off.” The win is even sweeter as Derek retired last month after working as a health and safety risk assessor at Kraft Foods, where Oreo biscuits are made in Sheffield. He went to his local Betfred shop in Worksop, Notts, and placed a 1p Goliath wager – an accumulator made up of 247 bets. His total stake was £2.47 and he describes his regular bet as a “bit of fun for less than a pint of beer.” But he was stunned to see it come in and is delighted to take home a staggering £27,326. Derek has handed his brother £12,000 and also has … [Read more...] about Punter scoops nearly £30k off a ‘1P’ bet – and will use it to pay off his brother’s mortgage
BETTING can seem like it has its own language to those who only have a flutter occasionally. Here's a handy guide to the terminology of the bookies for those who only stick a couple of quid on The Grand National every year. What is an each way bet? An each-way bet is technically two separate bets put on at the same time. The wagers are one to win and another to place. For the win part of the bet to give a return, the selection must win, or finish first, in the event. And for the place part of the bet to come in, the selection must either win or finish in one of the predetermined places for the event, such as first, second or third place. The odds paid on the place part of the bet are usually a fraction of the win odds. The trade-off is that the gambler has a greater chance of making one's bet in trade for getting less payoff for doing so. For example in horse racing you might place £10 each way on a horse to win. This would mean you put £5 on it to come first and £5 on … [Read more...] about What does each way mean in betting and what are fixed odds? Gambling terms explained
Which was the best Nebraska football team to not win a national championship?World-Herald staff writer Sam McKewon first posed the question on Twitter with four options — 1982, 1983, 1993 or 1999. Then Tuesday afternoon Tom Osborne was asked about it during an in-studio appearance on "The Bottom Line." "Probably '82 and '93 were the most complete teams that did not win a national championship," Osborne said. The former Husker coach spent a lot of time reflecting on that 1993 team, which went undefeated in the regular season before falling to Florida State, 18-16, in the Orange Bowl. Osborne said there were at least 10 blown calls in that game that went against the Huskers, though he stopped short of blaming the loss on officials. He said that team was the best Bobby Bowden had at Florida State."We gave a great effort," Osborne said. "I always felt bad for those players, because I felt they played good enough to win in most circumstances."Osborne covered a lot of topics during … [Read more...] about Tom Osborne says 1982, 1993 Huskers were best Nebraska teams to not win national title
Colorado’s most competitive congressional district holds an infamous distinction in the history of American mass shootings: It was where 12 students and a teacher were gunned down at Columbine High School in 1999 and where 12 died in the Aurora movie theater massacre in 2012. These tragedies have produced some of the nation’s loudest calls for tighter gun control in the past two decades, yet voters in the metro Denver district have in the past five elections backed Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman, a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights and someone who has won backing from the National Rifle Association. This juxtaposition is one that Democrats want to spotlight in their latest effort to dislodge the incumbent — a potentially risky move in a state where firearms are often a political third rail and an issue that hasn’t helped the party win the 6th Congressional District seat in years past. But gun control advocates and others on the left say it may … [Read more...] about Gun control hasn’t worked for Democrats in Colorado’s battleground congressional district.
