Earth could be peppered with deadly wayward comets in just over a million years' time when a wandering star enters the outer reaches of the Solar System. Popular culture is full of cosmic doomsday scenarios, many of which involve scientists detecting a large asteroid hurtling towards Earth. Comets, huge chunks of ice and dirt that encompass the entire solar system in a huge sphere known as the Oort Cloud , are perhaps less prominent in fictional disasters. This could be set to change in the far future. Currently, Earth's closest star apart from the sun is called Proxima Centauri, located about 4.25 light-years away. But our galaxy is a dynamic, ever-changing place, and in about a million years Earth will have a new, much closer stellar neighbor. Gliese 710 is a small star that is currently located around 62 light-years from Earth in the constellation Serpens Cauda. Scientists have known for around two decades that Gliese 710 is headed straight towards the Solar System, and … [Read more...] about Roaming star could rain millions of comets down on Earth in future doomsday

Machine Gun Kelly calls Eminem beef a “battle between past and future”
Cleveland-based rapper Machine Gun Kelly continues to drag Eminem after debuting his diss track, "Rap Devil," on Monday. As he made a stop Thursday on his The M A N I A Tour with Fall Out Boy in Eminem's home state of Michigan, Kelly continued the feud with his nemesis. "This is not a battle between Michigan and Ohio," Kelly said before performing "Rap Devil" at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. "This is a battle between the past and the motherf***ing future!" Kelly's beef with Eminem first surfaced in 2012. At the time, the "Bad Things" rapper tweeted about his thoughts on the "Love The Way You Lie" artist's then-teenage daughter, Hailie Scott. Kelly suggested Scott was "hot as f***," and Eminem wasn't amused. Flashing forward to 2018, Eminem decided to reignite his drama with Kelly on his newly released Kamikaze album. On "Not Alike," Eminem called out Kelly for his inappropriate comments about his daughter. "He wants to keep up his tough demeanor / So he … [Read more...] about Machine Gun Kelly calls Eminem beef a “battle between past and future”
UK royals’ spending up 17%, mostly for palace overhaul costs
LONDON (AP) — The British monarchy's publicly-funded spending rose by 17% to 102.4 million pounds ($124 million) in the past year, with the renovation of Buckingham Palace taking up a large part of the expenses, royal accounts published Thursday showed. The palace’s annual Sovereign Grant report showed that royal spending went up by 14.9 million pounds compared to the previous year. Critics described the spending as excessive amid Britain’s cost-of-living crisis. Property maintenance accounted for a big chunk of the spending — about 64 million pounds — because of a 10-year project to overhaul pipes, wiring and electricals at Buckingham Palace. Costs for official tours also went up, as the royals returned to making overseas visits after the lifting of coronavirus restrictions. The most expensive official royal tour in the past year was the trip taken by Prince William and his wife, Kate, to the Caribbean in March that cost about 226,000 pounds. The trip, meant to boost … [Read more...] about UK royals’ spending up 17%, mostly for palace overhaul costs
What Do Tattoos and Knitting Say About U.S.?
Here are some factoids to take to the "Jeopardy" audition: Over the past two generations, the number of left-handed Americans has nearly doubled. Between 2004 and 2005, the purchase of fashion yarn increased 56 percent. The fastest growing group of knitters are teens and twentysomethings. The fastest growing group of videogamers? Moms over the age of 45. People making more than $75,000 a year are much more likely to be among the 30 million Americans with tattoos than members of lower-income groups. Of young Californians surveyed last year, 1 percent aspire to become military snipers. Only 77 of Harvard's 6,700 undergraduates are majoring in math. At Yale, that number is 38 out of 5,300. These seemingly random bits of trivia of American life are the stuff of "Microtrends," a new book by pollster Mark Penn, which, he says, reveal the often baffling "under the radar" shifts that are reshaping American society—from one based on group identity and forces of circumstance such as race, … [Read more...] about What Do Tattoos and Knitting Say About U.S.?
Exiled in Abu Dhabi, Mohammed Dahlan Dreams of Gaza
World Hamas Gaza Palestine Liberation Organization Israel No place in the Arab world could be more different from the Gaza Strip than Abu Dhabi. The affluent emirate on the Gulf has shimmering skyscrapers, a Grand Prix racetrack and its own Louvre . Yet Mohammed Dahlan, the 53-year-old Gaza native and exiled political leader, seems comfortable here. His home is a glossy mingling of marble and glass, with chandeliers hanging from high ceilings and framed paintings on the walls. On a sunny winter day recently, he worked in his garden dressed in jeans and soft loafers, then greeted me on his waterfront patio. But for all its luxuriousness, Abu Dhabi is only temporary, Dahlan says—a staging area where he now plots his comeback. He's lived in this city for four years, ever since Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expelled him from the governing Fatah party and charged him with corruption and defamation. The rift between them cut short a political career that seemed … [Read more...] about Exiled in Abu Dhabi, Mohammed Dahlan Dreams of Gaza

Sri Lanka runs out of fuel, comes to a near-standstill
Cash-strapped Sri Lanka suspended nationwide fuel sales, except for essential services, for nearly a fortnight as the island faces a rapidly worsening economic crisis. In a press conference held on Monday night, Cabinet spokesperson and Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardana said private vehicles will be barred from buying fuel until July 10, after which the government has promised to ensure the usual supply. Authorities halted bus services between provinces and urged citizens to work from home in a bid to save fuel. Schools also remain shut. “Fuel will be issued only to health, defence, power and export sectors from midnight today until July 10,” Mr. Bandula Gunawardena told reporters. The state-run Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) will issue diesel and petrol only for essential services with effect from midnight, he said. These services include ports, airports, health, food distribution and agriculture. 5 huge royal bills YOU paid – Charles’ £15k helicopter trip and £100k for 3 train rides
Taxpayers' spending on the Royal Family topped £100million for the first time, as we forked out £102.4m for them. The UK continues to struggle with the cost of living crisis while spending on royals rose by £15million, or 17 per cent. The Sovereign Grant Report shows that last year, as in-person royal visits resumed following the pandemic, their travel costs rocketed from £1.3m to £4.5m. It comes as the Royal Family are said to be "extremely conscious" of how the cost of living crisis is impacting Britons where families are struggling to heat their homes and feed their kids. Campaign group Republic lambasted the figures, with chief executive Graham Smith saying: "As always, while the rest of us face a cost-of-living crisis and continued squeezes on public services, the royals walk off with hundreds of millions of pounds of taxpayers' money." A royal source said Charles was taking a very close interest in how inflation and the cost-of-living problems were impacting … [Read more...] about 5 huge royal bills YOU paid – Charles’ £15k helicopter trip and £100k for 3 train rides
