World A man who lay dying in a car wreck was given the chance to say farewell to his family thanks to the quick thinking of a group of police officers. Michael Bradshaw, 72, was suffering from serious injuries including broken legs after a head-on car crash in the English city of Chesterfield last October. The driver in the other car, Daniel Spooner, 30, died at the scene that officers described as “carnage.” Fearing that Mr Bradshaw’s car would also burst into flames, officers managed to haul him from his seat to give him first aid. Police officer Toby Meek who was one of the first on the scene said one car was completely crushed which then started to smoke. Toddlers Survive Alone for Days After Car Wreck Kills Mother
A 3-year-old boy and his 1-year-old brother survived alone for about two days after they were passengers in a single-car wreck that killed their mother in south Arkansas. The older boy was found first, wandering alone on Monday morning along a road in Camden, about 85 miles (135 kilometers) southwest of Little Rock, the Ouachita County Sheriff Office said. Authorities posted the boy's photo online in hopes of identifying him and learned that his mother hadn't been seen for days. Later Monday, police returned to the area where the boy was found and discovered a wrecked car in a deep ravine not visible from the road. Authorities found the body of the boy's mother, who had been ejected from the car, and his 1-year-old brother awake and alert in his car seat. Investigators believe the wreck happened two days earlier and that the older boy was able to climb out of the wreckage. Christopher Lee Watts was charged with five counts of murder Monday for the deaths of his wife Shanann Watts and … [Read more...] about Toddlers Survive Alone for Days After Car Wreck Kills Mother

Aug. 2, the deadliest day of the year for car wrecks in America
Emma Kinery, Bloomberg Published 7:56 am PDT, Wednesday, August 1, 2018 It's not Super Bowl Sunday or even New Year's Eve that makes for the most lethal day on U.S. highways. It's Aug. 2. Thursday is when, on average, car wrecks are likely to kill more Americans than any other day of the year, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which based its calculations on fatalities from 2012 to 2016. A total of 505 people were killed on that day during the period. Since the culprit isn't icy roads or drunken revelers, what makes that seemingly random date on the calendar so lethal? Sunny skies and vacation travelers, the same reasons the month of August is also one of the deadliest, says Becca Weast, a research scientist at IIHS. GET ALERTS: "In the summer, the weather is nice, sunny, and people just are a little more reckless, they're a little less careful," Weast said. When the weather is bad or there are other obvious risks that make driving more … [Read more...] about Aug. 2, the deadliest day of the year for car wrecks in America
Another Use For Drones: Investigating Car Wrecks
Stateline, ContributorStateline provides daily reporting and analysis on trends in state policy. When drones help police reconstruct crash scenes, roads reopen more quickly. 08/06/2018 10:35 am ET By Jenni Bergal When police investigators tried to figure out what caused a multi-vehicle crash that killed an elderly woman in Morton, Illinois, last month, they looked to the sky for help. Like a growing number of police agencies throughout the country, the sheriff’s office in Tazewell County relied on a drone to quickly take photographs of the scene from on high to help investigators reconstruct the crash. “It’s about a hundred times more detailed than what we could do with people taking the measurements,” Chief Deputy Jeff Lower said. “And it means that there’s much less time for the road to be closed and traffic to be backed up.” For decades, police investigators at crash scenes used chalk marks, tape measures and roller-wheels to … [Read more...] about Another Use For Drones: Investigating Car Wrecks
