Golf-Mickelson’s absence from PGA Championship felt by his peers
TULSA, Oklahoma (Reuters) -Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy may not agree with the comments Phil Mickelson made before taking a self-imposed hiatus from the sport, but both said on Tuesday they miss not having him in the field this week to defend his PGA Championship title. Mickelson, who became golf's oldest major champion at last year's PGA Championship when he triumphed shortly before turning 51, stepped away from the game in February amid the reaction to comments he made regarding a Saudi-backed golf league. The six-times major champion's public image took a hit when the author of an unauthorised biography said the American golfer told him he was willing to look past Saudi Arabia's human rights record to gain economic leverage over the PGA Tour. Saudi Arabia's government has denied accusations of human rights abuses and Mickelson later apologised for the comments, which he said were off the record. Woods, speaking during his pre-tournament news conference at Southern Hills, … [Read more...] about Golf-Mickelson’s absence from PGA Championship felt by his peers
Buffalo sports teams offer support at site of mass shooting
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo resident Jamie Lash was giddy as Buffalo Bills player Josh Thomas draped his arm around her shoulder and smiled for a picture Wednesday. It was a rare moment of lightness in a week spent mourning the violent deaths of 10 people at the Tops supermarket where she used to work. “It means unity. It means support,” Lash said, adjusting the Bills cap someone else from the team had placed on her head. “We see the Bills mafia everywhere supporting us,” said Thomas, a defensive back on the team. He was one of dozens of players and staff from the NFL team, the NHL's Buffalo Sabres and the Buffalo Bandits professional lacrosse team to emerge from four tour buses at the scene of Saturday's racist attack, where they laid flowers, dished out food and handed out groceries. The first stop was a group visit to a memorial at the edge of the store's parking lot, where several players placed flowers in front of cut-outs of doves, each bearing the name of a victim. … [Read more...] about Buffalo sports teams offer support at site of mass shooting
US Soccer equalizes pay in milestone with women, men
The U.S. Soccer Federation reached milestone agreements to pay its men's and women's teams equally, making the American national governing body the first in the sport to promise both sexes matching money. The federation announced separate collective bargaining agreements through December 2028 with the unions for both national teams on Wednesday, ending years of often acrimonious negotiations. The men have been playing under the terms of a CBA that expired in December 2018. The women's CBA expired at the end of March, but talks continued after the federation and the players agreed to settle a gender discrimination lawsuit brought by some of the players in 2019. The settlement was contingent on the federation reaching labor contracts that equalized pay and bonuses between the two teams. Led by Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, American women long have pressed for gender equity. “I feel a lot of pride for the girls who are going to see this growing up, and recognize their value … [Read more...] about US Soccer equalizes pay in milestone with women, men
Satwiksairaj over the moon
For R. Satwiksairaj it has been a dream come true! “In 2015, when my teammates were training, I went to watch the semifinals and final of the Thomas Cup in China. And, believe me, I was cheering for Indonesia which was facing Korea in the final. Then, I wondered whether I would ever be on the court playing the Thomas Cup final,” said a delighted Satwik in an exclusive chat with The Hindu on his return from Bangkok after playing a lead role along with his doubles partner Chirag Shetty in India winning the Thomas Cup for the first time. “Winning the Thomas Cup is a different kind of feeling” “For me Bangkok has always been a lucky venue. That was where I won my first ABC medal (silver in mixed doubles and bronze in doubles in the under-15 category), our (he and Chirag) first Super Series title when we won the Thailand Open Super 500 title in 2019 to name a few,” he said. “So when we were facing Indonesia, there was that gut feeling and the burning desire to be the champions … [Read more...] about Satwiksairaj over the moon
Soccer-Qatar World Cup hotels must welcome guests in ‘non-discriminatory manner’ – FIFA
(Reuters) - Hotels that are on the official list of recommended accommodation for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar are required to welcome guests in a "non-discriminatory manner" or face termination of contracts, FIFA said on Friday. A Scandinavian media survey showed that three of the 69 hotels on FIFA's official list of recommended accommodation will deny entry to same-sex couples. Twenty other hotels said they would accommodate them as long as they did not publicly show that they were gay, while 33 hotels had no issues on booking same-sex couples. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, which will host the World Cup from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18. In a statement to Reuters, FIFA said that, since being made aware of the report, it has been in touch with the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) and "will ensure that the hotels mentioned are once again made aware of our strict requirements in relation to welcoming guests in a non-discriminatory manner. "Hotels, as well as any … [Read more...] about Soccer-Qatar World Cup hotels must welcome guests in ‘non-discriminatory manner’ – FIFA
Soccer-Klopp delighted with his fringe ‘Ferraris’ after win over Southampton
(Reuters) - Juergen Klopp gambled by making nine changes to his side for Tuesday's crucial Premier League game at Southampton but the Liverpool manager was left impressed by his fringe players after their 2-1 win kept the title race alive. The victory took Liverpool to within a point of leaders Manchester City ahead of the final round of matches on Sunday. Klopp, already without Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk due to injury, made a raft of changes to the side that beat Chelsea on penalties in the FA Cup final on Sunday. "After making nine changes, if it didn't work out it was my responsibility, now it worked out it's the boys' responsibility. I thought they did exceptionally well," said Klopp. "I'm so happy about the performance it was a bit touching. It's like having Ferraris in the garage." Takumi Minamino, one of the players brought in, cancelled out Nathan Redmond's early strike as Liverpool came from behind to pick up the win. "That Takumi doesn't play more … [Read more...] about Soccer-Klopp delighted with his fringe ‘Ferraris’ after win over Southampton

Soccer-Title-chasing Liverpool’s Salah, Van Dijk doubts for Southampton trip
(Reuters) - Liverpool are still assessing the fitness of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk ahead of Tuesday's Premier League trip to Southampton where they could close the gap on leaders Manchester City to one point, manager Juergen Klopp said on Monday. Forward Salah and defender Van Dijk were substituted during Saturday's FA Cup final against Chelsea, which Liverpool won on penalties to lift their second trophy of the season. "The process is not finished yet because we only played the 120 minutes two days ago... We have a lot of decisions," Klopp told a news conference. "Those extra 30 minutes made a big difference... We will have to make changes, I don't know how many." Klopp added that defensive midfielder Fabinho, who missed the win over Chelsea with a hamstring injury, will remain sidelined for the game at St Mary's Stadium. "His recovery is going very well, but he will not be involved tomorrow," the German said. Golf-Masters champ Scheffler hungry as ever at PGA Championship
(Reuters) - Masters champion Scottie Scheffler said on Tuesday that despite figuring out a winning formula that has produced one of the best runs in recent memory, he remains as hungry as ever going into this week's PGA Championship. World number one Scheffler, a co-favourite for this week's PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club, said other than more requests for his autographs and people hollering his name, life has remained mostly the same. "Winning the Masters is a huge honour for me and we've definitely been able to enjoy that a little bit," Scheffler said at his pre-tournament news conference. "After a little while, it's kind of back to business and so I've been preparing and getting ready for this week." In his last major, Scheffler enjoyed the biggest win of his career with a three-stroke Masters victory in April to extend an impressive run during which he won four times in six starts. Scheffler, fresh off a share of 15th place at last week's AT&T Byron … [Read more...] about Golf-Masters champ Scheffler hungry as ever at PGA Championship
