FOR the past month Muslims across the world have been partaking in Ramadan - a holy period of giving to charity and fasting to mark "the best of times". Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, celebrating the moment the Koran was revealed to the prophet Muhammad. So, what happens during the religious month and when is Eid al-Fitr in 2019? When is Ramadan 2019? Ramadan began on the evening of Sunday, May 5, 2019 and continued for 30 days until June 4, 2019. The beginning and end are determined by the lunar Islamic calendar – meaning it depends on when the new moon is sighted. Hilal, the crescent, is usually a day or more after the astronomical new moon. The "night of power" or "night of decree" is considered the holiest night of the year, as Muslims believe the first revelation of the Koran was sent down to Muhammad on this night. It's thought to have occurred on an odd-numbered night during the last ten days of Ramadan - the 21, 23, 25, 27 or 29th. Consumer group Which? claimed holidaymakers are being conned into booking accommodation which bears little resemblance to images published in brochures and online. In one case, a woman arrived at a hotel in Majorca which was located on a beach – as shown in the photographs – only for a porter to carry her luggage across the road to a sister property. “Surely that’s false advertising,” she said. “I was in sheer disbelief that I wasn’t staying in the hotel pictured.” Another holidaymaker booked a stay at a “VIP” cottage on the Isle of Wight, with promotional images suggesting the property had a well-maintained garden. EVERYONE looks forward to the influx of bank holidays that arrive around Easter and May each year and 2019 is no different. But what exactly is May Day and when is our early May long weekend this year? What is May Day and when is the UK bank holiday? May Day is a holiday usually celebrated on May 1 and is a day that stems from ancient celebrations of spring. However, in England, May 1 is not a public holiday unless it falls on a Monday. Instead, since 1978 the Spring bank holiday has always fallen on the first Monday of the month. This year, as May Day falls on a Wednesday, the bank holiday is moved to the following Monday, which is May 6. Unlike the other bank holidays, the first Monday in May is taken off from schools by itself, and not as part of an end of term or half term holiday. The reason for this is because the day has no Christian significance - so doesn’t fit into the usual school holiday pattern. In the UK, May 1 is also International Workers’ Day – or … [Read more...] about Happy May Day 2019! How is 1st May celebrated in the UK and what traditions and quotes are there?
