AFTER a huge fire ripped through Grenfell Tower killing dozens, attention turned to the firm which looks after it. Over a year on from the shocking blaze which shook Britain we take a look at the building's tragic history... When was Grenfell Tower built? Grenfell Tower was built in 1974 by Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council. In 2017 it underwent a multi-million pound redevelopment. It emerged that the fire was intensified by low-cost cladding that had been added to the building as part of the recent renovation work. KCTMO saved £293,000 by downgrading the material used to clad the tower, according to leaked emails seen by The Times. Price outlines and minutes of meeting seen by the newspaper also appear to show that cost-cutting was a priority for the housing association. KCTMO sent an urgent email to project management consultants, Artelia UK, which read: “We need good costs for Cllr Feilding-Mellen and the planner tomorrow at 8.45am!” Rock Feilding-Mellen, … [Read more...] about What year was Grenfell Tower built, how many people lived there, who was it named after and when did the fire take place?

FOUR out of five tower blocks wrapped in dangerous Grenfell Tower-style cladding are yet to have it removed, according to the latest Government figures. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government said there are still 354 high-rise residential and public buildings with cladding systems unlikely to meet building regulations. So far 79 in England have had work completed since 72 people died when a blaze ripped through the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in West London in June 2017. Of those remaining 117 are social sector flats, 228 are private sector buildings and nine are publicly-owned. Monthly data showed work to remove the cladding has begun on 84 of the social sector buildings, with 32 more having work scheduled. another life wasted Teen stabbed to death outside Waitrose in Kensington knife frenzy HOSPITAL DRAMA Carnage as scaffolding crashes down at London hospital in high winds HOLD ONTO YOUR HATS Polar vortex plunges Britain into MONTH-long big freeze 'i held her under' … [Read more...] about Majority of tower blocks with Grenfell-style cladding are yet to have it removed, Government figures reveal
AN investigation has revealed that 55 of the 72 people killed in the Grenfell Tower fire were told to stay inside their homes as the blaze took hold. A Dispatches documentary, set to air on Channel 4 tonight at 8pm, found there was a deadly breakdown in communication between operatives taking 999 calls and the crew trying to save lives in the West London disaster zone. The programme, Grenfell: Did the Fire Brigade Fail?, also revealed that firefighters didn’t have the training required to evacuate the building — even though this could have taken just seven minutes. One firefighter, speaking to the Dispatches team anonymously, said that Michael Dowden, the incident commander on the night of the disaster on June 14, 2017, didn’t have the right guidance. He said: “There is one line in one of the policies I believe that says consider mass evacuation. But there is no guidance on how to do it. “Michael Dowden didn’t have the toolkit to tackle that fire. He … [Read more...] about Probe reveals 55 of the 72 killed in the Grenfell Tower fire were told to stay inside their homes
SOLDIERS are living in death-trap barracks due to repeated budget cuts and a woeful decline in safety drills, the MoD watchdog warns. Thousands of unmarried troops live in rundown quarters, including a 33-storey block taller than Grenfell Tower. Two serious fires have hit the Army’s single living accommodation in 16 months. But dire warnings in a report by the Defence Safety Authority (DSA) have been covered up, says a whistleblower. The senior defence source said: “Young soldiers are going to burn to death in their beds. “Everybody knows that it won’t be long before things get so bad that people are killed. “That’s why no senior civil servant wants his name on the door when it happens. “It’s sheer cowardice and a betrayal of every man and woman serving in uniform.” DSA boss Lt Gen Richard Felton ordered the report after blazes at Aliwal barracks in Tidworth, Wilts, and Thiepval Barracks in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. Both incidents … [Read more...] about Fury as MoD cover-up is exposed, revealing thousands of soldiers are living in Grenfell-style fire traps, watchdog says
MEGHAN Markle took Prince Harry on a secret visit to the Grenfell community kitchen yesterday — where Adele also made an appearance. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex went to the Hubb Community Kitchen which provides support for the families of the Grenfell Tower fire. Meghan, who is currently expecting her first child with Harry, previously helped to raise £250,000 for the kitchen and wrote the foreword of a charity cookbook of recipes inspired by the group. The visit was made all the more special by the fact that it was Prince Harry's first appearance at the centre. But the royal couple weren't the only famous faces at the kitchen last night as pop star Adele also dropped by to see the work the women there have been doing. Pictures of the singer with women at the kitchen were widely shared on social media. Munria Mahmoud, of the founders of the kitchen, wrote online: "Had the pleasure of cooking for Adele 2 days in a row. Wow. What a blessing.
