Pope hails families, blasts ‘culture of waste’ after Roe
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 15 ROME (AP) — Pope Francis celebrated families Saturday and urged them to shun “selfish” decisions that are indifferent to life as he closed out a big Vatican rally a day after the U.S. Supreme Court ended constitutional protections for abortion. Francis didn’t refer to the ruling or explicitly mention abortion in his homily. But he used the buzzwords he has throughout his papacy about the need to defend families and to condemn a “culture of waste” that he believes is behind the societal acceptance of abortion. “Let us not allow the family to be poisoned by the toxins of selfishness, individualism, today's culture of indifference and waste, and as a result lose its very DNA, which is the spirit of welcoming and service,” he said. The pope, noting that some couples allow their fears and anxieties to “thwart the … [Read more...] about Pope hails families, blasts ‘culture of waste’ after Roe
Compensate Parents for Loss of Child in Accidents: SC Lays Down Concept of ‘Filial Consortium’
New Delhi: The greatest agony for a parent is to lose their child during their lifetime, said the Supreme Court on Tuesday as it laid down the concept of 'filial consortium' for awarding compensation to the parents in case of accidental death of a child. A bench of Justices Rohinton F Nariman and Indu Malhotra noted that there has not been any principles enunciated by the Supreme Court on the issue of filial consortium so far, but it is time the courts in the country take this aspect into account while giving compensation in accident cases. "In case where a parent has lost their minor child, or unmarried son or daughter, the parents are entitled to be awarded loss of consortium under the head of Filial Consortium," held the judgment, authored by Justice Malhotra. The bench said that consortium is a special prism reflecting changing norms about the status and worth of actual relationships. "Modern jurisdictions world over have recognized that the value of a child’s consortium … [Read more...] about Compensate Parents for Loss of Child in Accidents: SC Lays Down Concept of ‘Filial Consortium’
‘I hide in my car to get away from my kids – it stops me feeling overwhelmed’
A mum-of-three has admitted to hiding in her car for 90 minutes each week in order to escape her children and enjoy some much-needed time to herself. Claire Haiek, from Sydney, Australia, started making time for herself earlier this year when her seven-year-old daughter Olivia began taking tap dancing lessons, as she would stay in the car for the 30 minutes that the class took. But shortly afterwards, Olivia said she wanted to go to ballet classes too, which run for 45 minutes directly after the tap class, with a 15-minute break in between. This meant that Olivia would be busy for a full 90 minutes, and rather than drive back home to wait for her classes to be finished, Claire decided she would spend that hour and a half by herself in the peace and quiet of her car. Religious schools may face another hurdle to state tuition
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Religious schools got what they wanted when the Supreme Court allowed them to participate in a state tuition program. But the state attorney general said the ruling will be for naught unless the schools are willing to abide by the same antidiscrimination law as other private schools that participate in the program. An attorney for the families criticized the “knee-jerk” comments, and the leader of a religious group predicted further litigation. The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that Maine can't exclude religious schools from a program that offers tuition for private education in towns that don’t have public schools. But religious schools didn't have long to savor their victory before learning of a new hurdle. Attorney General Aaron Frey said both Christian schools involved in the lawsuit have policies that discriminate against students and staff on a basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, preventing their participation in the tuition program … [Read more...] about Religious schools may face another hurdle to state tuition
Florida emerges as key battleground in state-by-state abortion fight
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The U.S. Supreme Court's abortion decision is expected to make Florida an epicenter of the state-by-state fight over the issue in the coming months, raising the stakes for abortion rights advocates in the November election and complicating effortsw by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis to manage both his statewide and national political fortunes. Within hours of the court's decision, access to abortion emerged as a major fault line in America's divisive cultural battles. Thirteen conservative states with "trigger bans" will outlaw abortion within 30 days - and the procedure could soon be prohibited in several others. Lawmakers in heavily Democratic northern and western states are promising to become safe havens for women who want an abortion but are banned from receiving one at home. But in Florida, where residents in a half-dozen relatively liberal urban counties are continually locked in political duels with the conservatives who dominate much of the rest of … [Read more...] about Florida emerges as key battleground in state-by-state abortion fight

‘Traffic-free’ is a marvellous idea – unless you’re disabled
Air in urban Britain is filthy . Sometimes it can feel almost like breathing through the fug of second-hand smoke in a pre-smoking-ban boozer. It is the cause of asthma in children and a host of other respiratory complaints. It is deleterious to health generally. We really need to clean up. Councils have sought to do this by restricting, even banning, cars – particularly in streets near schools around pick-up and drop-off times in an attempt to discourage school run snarl-ups. This is not just with a view to cleaning up the air, or the fact that walking is good exercise when childhood obesity is a problem. The roads around schools can sometimes look like a fresh reboot of Mad Max . The sight of parents cussing each other, even coming to blows, is something we could do without. Proponents of such schemes often point to how nice car-free cities can be – Copenhagen is often cited – once people get used to the idea. There is academic research in their favour too. … [Read more...] about ‘Traffic-free’ is a marvellous idea – unless you’re disabled
