Here’s when the next round of rain showers is forecast for the Bay Area

March 18, 2023 by www.sfchronicle.com

WEATHER UPDATE : Another stormy week is on tap for California. Here's what we know

Bay Area residents have been basking in the sun for the past couple days, enjoying a break from the storms that soaked Northern California, while traces of fog help cool off some of the hillsides near the coast. This sunshine is on its way out by the end of this weekend, but the Friday and Saturday chance for showers from the forecast earlier in the week has been downgraded to patchy drizzles and morning fog.

  • Live storm map : See where snow and rain are hitting California and Bay Area

Starting Friday morning, there's a good chance fog will envelop the coastline of Sonoma and Marin counties and parts of San Francisco Bay. By Saturday morning, that fog could make its way toward parts of Santa Rosa and raise a few drizzles. These drizzles will then evolve into light showers by Saturday afternoon and evening, and scatter out to the wider Bay Area Sunday morning, delaying some of the flood recovery efforts underway.

Fog, drizzles, rain

Friday is forecast to start off with traces of fog along the coast and mist streaming into some of the hillsides along San Francisco Bay.

This fog will develop as a result of the warmer daytime and nighttime temperatures that are forecast for Friday and Saturday. Up until this week, nighttime lows across the region have mostly fallen to the 40s. But it's spring now, and as the days grow longer, those overnight temperatures stay above 50 degrees more often by the coast and bays.

As nighttime and morning temperatures match up with sea-surface temperatures — which are running between 52 degrees and 57 degrees off the coast of San Francisco — the region will begin to experience more fog. That's because when air and ocean temperatures sync up, it allows for evaporation to happen at sea level. This results in more fog off the coast, and the ebb-and-flow cycle of fog once again takes hold of the Bay Area.

This weekend will provide a sneak preview of the widespread fog that will resurface along the Northern California coast and San Francisco Bay later in the season.

As for immediate weather impacts, this fog also signals the return of more moisture from the Pacific Ocean. California's storm door hasn't been shut just yet, so this weekend's fog will gradually evaporate every morning, saturating the air and allowing mist and drizzles to form along the immediate coastline by Saturday afternoon.

As southwest winds pick up again, so too will the chance for showers. By Saturday night, residents across the Bay Area will have a good chance of experiencing drizzles. These will develop into light showers by Sunday, as the region returns to its wet pattern. Unfortunately for Northern California, this onslaught of rain is looking to continue into early next week.

Weekend Breakdown

San Francisco: Rounds of fog and mist are on tap for some of the hillsides around Mount Sutro, Twin Peaks and Bernal Heights. Residents closer to the Embarcadero and North Beach might also catch a view of the fog and mist that's forecast around Alcatraz this morning. Most of the fog will burn off by 11 a.m., while puffy cumulus clouds dot the sky for the rest of Friday. Look for a pleasant Friday afternoon as temperatures reach the upper 50s on the west side and lower 60s in the Mission, Castro and most neighborhoods east of Sutro Tower.

The warm, moist air overhead will keep daytime temperatures in the lower 60s across the city by Saturday, while nighttime temperatures this weekend will generally hover between the upper 40s to lower 50s. Chances for morning fog will continue into Saturday, along with a chance for mist and drizzles along the Presidio, Ocean Beach and most of the outer Sunset and Richmond districts. Be sure to have an umbrella handy, because these drizzles will slowly evolve into light showers by Sunday morning. The chances for rain will spread out to all corners of the city by Sunday afternoon, keeping temperatures closer to the mid-50s on the west side and upper 50s elsewhere.

Pacific Coast and Peninsula: A mix of fog and mist will sit over the coast Friday morning, engulfing parts of Highway 1 between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay before spilling into the San Bruno Gap. This means Daly City, Millbrae and San Francisco International Airport will have a good chance of being shrouded in fog through 9 a.m. before it all begins to clear out. The rest of the day will see a sprinkling of puffy clouds over most of the Peninsula as a light sea breeze rolls up to where the fog was nestled in the morning. Residents under the fog this morning can expect daytime highs in the upper 50s while the rest of the Peninsula, including most of the Highway 101 corridor south of Millbrae, can look for daytime highs in the lower 60s.

This trend will continue into Saturday, as the fog returns in the morning and is swapped by a light, cool sea breeze. Look for daytime highs on Saturday in the lower 60s by the water and mid-60s on the foothills of Redwood City, Emerald Hills and San Andreas Lake. By Saturday night, the coast and San Bruno Gap have a slight chance of mist developing. This mist will gradually become drizzles and those drizzles have a good chance of becoming light rain showers by Sunday. That light rain may then spread south along 101 into Belmont, San Carlos and Redwood City by Sunday afternoon, keeping daytime temperatures in the mid- to upper 50s.

North Bay: Residents along the Sonoma and Marin coast will be treated to some morning fog and mist, forecast to spill into the Santa Rosa, Petaluma and Napa valleys, while most residents in Solano County may see fog rolling up from San Pablo Bay. All of that fog will begin to clear out after 10 a.m., making way for partly cloudy skies and comfortable daytime temperatures in the lower 60s in the Marin Headlands, mid-60s in the inland valleys of Napa and Sonoma counties and upper 60s in Solano County.

The ebb and flow of the morning fog and warm temperatures will continue into Saturday across the North Bay, though the North American weather model hints that the fog could raise a few drizzles in the highlands of Napa and Sonoma counties. These chances will remain low and isolated to west- and south-facing hillsides near some of the vineyards, but by Sunday morning they will begin to spread out. Weather models forecast a wet Sunday afternoon for much of the region and a 5-10 degree cooldown, as light showers surface across the North Bay. Be sure to have an umbrella handy, because the wet pattern will be back.

East Bay: Fog and mist will once again be possible Friday morning along the Oakland and Berkeley hills, spreading into Albany, Richmond and Alameda through 9 a.m. Most of it will then quickly clear out by Friday afternoon, while partly cloudy skies dot Contra Costa and Alameda counties. Residents along San Francisco Bay and the delta can look forward to daytime highs in the lower 60s on Friday and mid-60s by Saturday. The lack of morning fog this weekend east of the Caldecott Tunnel will result in cities like Walnut Creek, Dublin and Pleasanton reaching the upper 60s on Friday and Saturday.

But don't get too used to this comfortable weather pattern.

Those same areas along San Francisco Bay and the delta where fog is forecast for Friday and Saturday mornings can expect light drizzles by Saturday night. These drizzles will gradually evolve into light rain showers by Sunday morning and scatter out to the rest of the East Bay. The cool, moist air will also lead to a 5-10 degree drop in daytime temperatures, leaving most of Alameda and Contra Costa counties in the upper 50s by Sunday afternoon.

South Bay and Santa Cruz: Aside from a few patches of fog along stretches of Highway 1 between Davenport and Santa Cruz and some stray mist in the Cupertino Hills, residents across the South Bay and along northern Monterey Bay can look forward to partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures on Friday and Saturday. Drivers taking Highway 152 from Watsonville up to the 101 corridor between Gilroy and Morgan Hill will be treated to a temperature spread of around 10-12 degrees. Daytime temperatures are forecast to reach the upper 50s to lower 60s along the Santa Cruz coast, while residents in the Santa Clara Valley can look forward to upper 60s and even a few lower 70s.

Don't break out the shorts just yet. This comfortable weather will be quickly replaced by a 10-degree cooldown across the South Bay and Santa Cruz County on Sunday as light showers spill into the region. These showers will be widespread and will unfortunately delay some of the flood receding efforts in parts of Corralitos, Watsonville, Aptos and Capitola. Some of these showers will also spill into Felton, Ben Lomond and Scotts Valley, which are all still recovering from flooding earlier this week.
