Today’s Wordle word of the day: #338 answer and hints – May 23

May 23, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Wordle is the viral word game open to all to solve for just one day on The New York Times website.

Wordle’s aim is very basic, with the puzzle demanding participants figure out a five-letter word in six guesses or fewer.

Working out how to give oneself an edge in Wordle is easy; requiring people to simply focus only on the tiles’ color while guessing the solution.

When a tile turns gray following each guess, it suggests this particular letter won’t feature anywhere in the answer.

If the specific letter is included in the word, but in another position, the tile turns a mellow yellow color.

But if you strike gold and the tile turns green, you can rest easy in the knowledge the letter is not only included in the word, but it’s also sitting in exactly the right place.

Wordle players have every right to feel smug should they arrive at the correct answer, and the viral game caters to this sense of achievement by tracking people’s vital statistics.

The puzzle not only keeps a tab on the correct answers successfully maneuvered, it also remembers the duration of winning streaks.

Matthew Robinson, junior client service director at Definition Agency, claims to “have never ‘lost’ on Wordle ” and has “had a 100 percent win record since starting to play the game in January.”

He told Newsweek : “I never, ever use a ‘starter’ word. There are lots of good ‘starter’ word options, but I always try to start with a new word everyday to help keep up the challenge.

“I sometimes like to play ‘reverse’ Wordle with friends, where we share our results of that day’s game, then try to guess (in six guesses) what each other’s starter word was.”

Spoiler alert: the answer to May 23’s Wordle #338 sits right at the bottom of this article, so take care when scrolling down.

‘Wordle’ Origins

East Coast-based software engineer Josh Wardle and his partner brought Wordle into the world as a cerebral exercise to enjoy during lockdown.

When it first went live to the public in October 2021, Wordle swiftly went from just 90 people among its active player base to becoming a worldwide phenomenon with an incredible 45 million daily users.

Wordle’s deceptively straightforward gameplay is possibly the best explanation for why the puzzle so quickly went from an intimate experience shared between double digits of participants to a viral sensation in just a few months.

Since its release, Wordle has since inspired several other daily word games, most recently including Absurdle , an even harder version of the puzzle.

The Statista graphic, seen below, catalogs Wordle’s border-line exponential rise among puzzle fans around the world.
