PIP , or Personal Independence Payment as it is formally known, helps those living with a long-term disability or health condition. It can provide financial support to cover some of the costs a disability or condition comes with. The amount a person will get is based on how their condition impacts them, rather than the condition itself.

And it is for this reason that those who do not have an outwardly showing health need may be able to receive a sum.

PIP not only assists those with a physical disability, but also those with a mental health condition too.

There are a number of hidden conditions for which a person could gain this kind of support.

Hidden conditions, for example, include:

  • Autism
  • Arthritis
  • Brain injuries
  • Crohn's Disease
  • Chronic pain
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Depression, ADHD, Bipolar and Anxiety
  • Learning difficulties
  • Visual and auditory disabilities

According to the organisation Progress Lifeline, in the UK alone one in five people have a disability.

And some 80 percent of those individuals will be living with an "invisible" disability.

During COVID-19, many of these people have faced additional challenges which require further aid.

PIP support, then, may prove invaluable to these individuals in their day-to-day lives.

A person will be able to receive PIP whether they are working or not, but must usually be 16 or over and under state pension age.

They must have a physical or mental health condition or disability where they:

  • Have had difficulties with daily living or getting around – or both – for three months
  • Expect these difficulties to continue for at least nine months

PIP claimants usually need to have lived in England, Scotland or Wales for at least two of the last three years.

They also need to be in one of these countries when making their application.

The payment is made up of two parts, and what a person receives is based on how severely their condition impacts them.

The daily living part has a weekly rate of either £60.00 or £89.60.

And for the mobility part, the rate is either £23.70 or £62.55 per week.

This means that for someone in receipt of both parts on the higher level, a sum of £608 per month could be gained for their needs.

People can expect to be assessed health wise to work out how much they will receive.

What is important to note, though, is that the payment is tax-free, with the amount someone receives is also not impacted by their income or savings.

To receive PIP, people will need to call the DWP to make a new claim.

They will need, however, certain information to hand, including contact details, date of birth, healthcare provider details, National Insurance number and bank sort code and account number.
