Unarmed man shot by Napa County deputy dies; officials say man had arm behind back

An unarmned man who was shot and critically wounded by a Napa County sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop Monday night died Tuesday, authorities said. Juan Adrian Garcia, 47, died Tuesday night at Queen of the Valley Medical Center. Police are investigating the incident. The shooting happened about 10:10 p.m. south of the city of Napa, near Kaiser Road and Highway 221, after a deputy pulled over Garcia. Authorities said Garcia got out of his car with one hand tucked behind his back. The deputy retreated and told Garcia to show his hands, but Garcia did not comply, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The interaction continued for about a minute before the deputy shot Garcia. Authorities said Garcia was walking “aggressively” toward the deputy when he was shot. Responding deputies later discovered that Garcia was not holding anything. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The deputy, who has not been identified, was placed on paid administrative leave. Henry Wofford, a sheriff’s spokesman, said the shooting was captured on the deputy’s body-worn camera.
