The family had been staying at the motel outside the town of Benton Harbor, an establishment that local officials described as a place where people could get back on their feet and live for extended periods.
Four other hotel guests were treated for smoke inhalation.

The mother and five out of six of her children were pulled out of the motel’s middle building by first responders.
The woman was identified as 26-year-old Kiarre Curtis.
“I tried to get the (surviving) baby from the man in case he fell down, but he wouldn’t give up the baby”, Clements said.
“It’s tragic. It tears at your heart”, Boyce said.
Another motel resident, Sarah Sanders, said she fled after a friend shouted at her to get out.
Authorities said 27 rooms were occupied at the time of the fire and several of the occupants were taken to Lakeland Medical Center.
Curtis’ husband, Samuel Curtis, was the father of some of the children who died, Boyce said. “I liked them. They were little, young children”, neighbor Robert Payne said. Curtis and her children were staying in a room on the second floor.
The precise cause still is under investigation, although early signs indicate the source of the fire was an electrical appliance.
The sheriff’s office also said that investigators are examining the motel’s fire alarms and smoke detectors after some residents said numerous alarms and detectors didn’t work.
Smoke damage could be seen on some outside walls of the two-story motel-style building, images on local television showed.
