After faring poorly in ongoing caucuses in the 5th Congressional District, Democratic candidate Ben Cullop of Albemarle County dropped out of the race Tuesday. That leaves Leslie Cockburn, who leads the ongoing delegate race thus far, competing with Andrew Sneathern and Roger Dean Huffstetler for the chance to challenge U.S. Rep. Tom Garrett, R-Buckingham, in November. Cullop said in a statement that he looked forward to helping whoever wins the nomination defeat Garrett, who is seeking a second term in Congress. The Democratic Committee for the 5th Congressional District opted to use the party-run caucus and convention process to pick a nominee rather than a state-run primary. Democratic voters attend the caucuses and their votes determine how many delegates each candidate will get at a nominating convention May 5 in Farmville. Caucuses in the district’s 23 localities began Saturday and continue this week. Twelve localities, including Albemarle County, have already voted. Eleven localities, including the city of Charlottesville, remain.
