Militants hand over weapons in southwestern Syria

February 7, 2018 by upbeacon.net

The civilians fled fighting, and areas where offensives are expected.

“We will continue protecting our borders, we will provide humanitarian aid to the full extent possible, we will not allow entry into our territory and we will demand strict adherence to the 1974 disengagement deals with the Syrian army”, he said.

At least eight battered opposition-held towns in southern Syria returned to Assad regime control under Russian-brokered deals on Saturday as air strikes killed at least 15 civilians, a monitor said.

The campaign has shattered a “de-escalation” deal negotiated by the United States, Russia and Jordan that had mostly contained fighting in the southwest since past year.

Jordan, which borders Deraa province, has been facilitating talks between rebel factions and Moscow over a deal that would end the violence in exchange for the return of state rule there.

The regime has chipped away at rebel-held territory in Daraa since ratcheting up the violence nearly two weeks ago, with Russian Federation stepping in to oversee a string of deals to retake towns from the embattled rebels. The government forces now claim to be in control of more than half of Daraa province.

The Jordanian army began delivering humanitarian aid to thousands of displaced Syrians who took shelter near its border when major fighting broke out in southern Syria this month, a government spokeswoman said on Saturday. The regime wants us to hand over everything – Daraa city, the Nasib crossing, ourselves and the heavy weapons.

Talks involving rebels, local officials and regime ally Russian Federation saw agreements struck for four villages and a strategic town near the border with Jordan, extending government control to some 60 percent of the southern Daraa province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The agency’s Jordan spokesman Mohammed Hawar said that he expects the number to rise.

Opposition officials involved in steering the rebel negotiating team said continued air strikes during the talks had undermined trust in the process.

“The real concern is that we are going to see a repetition of what we saw in eastern Ghouta – the bloodshed, the suffering, the civilians being held, being under a siege”, United Nations human rights spokeswoman Liz Throssell said.

At least five at people were killed in regime bombardment of Deraa on Saturday, the Observatory said, taking the civilian death toll in the province to 105, including 19 children, since June 19.

Jordan’s prime minister visits a key crossing with Syria on Sunday, inspecting aid deliveries by the Jordanian army to the tens of thousands of displaced Syrians gathering at the border Amman has kept sealed.

“I’ll talk to him about everything”, Mr Trump said aboard Air Force One on his way to New Jersey.

The war has been going Mr Assad’s way since Russian Federation intervened on his side in 2015, when he held just a fraction of the country.

The assault has so far focused on Deraa, not rebel-held parts of nearby Quneitra province in the Golan Heights which are more sensitive to Israel.
