Fikri Harish (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta ● Wed, March 29, 2023 As Indonesia faces the possibility of losing its license to host the 2023 U-20 World Cup over calls to bar Israel from participating in the tournament, it is Wayan Koster, governor of the free-spirited resort island Bali, who has been thrust into the spotlight, not right-wing ideologues. Seoul to Make Report on N.Korean Rights Abuses Public
March 29, 2023 12:38 The government will for the first time make its report on North Korea's human rights abuses public on Friday. President Yoon Suk-yeol said in a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, "The reality of the appalling violations of the North Korean people's human rights must be fully revealed to the international community." Similar reports had been compiled annually since a law on North Korean human rights was enacted in 2016 but, in a bizarre compromise aimed at softening up the regime, never made public. But now the Yoon administration decided it needs to be widely read. "The whole point of the roadmap for national security and reunification is to find out the situation on human rights, politics, economy and society in the North through various routes and let it be known at home and abroad," Yoon said. "With the publication of the report, the Education Ministry and other government agencies… should teach students about the human rights situation in the North and let … [Read more...] about Seoul to Make Report on N.Korean Rights Abuses Public
Fine Dust Pollution Thickens
March 29, 2023 09:23 The air quality across Korea is expected to remain poor at least until the end of this month as more ultrafine or PM2.5 dust blown in from China stagnates over the peninsula. The Korea Meteorological Administration on Tuesday said more fine dust will blow in from China on Wednesday to deepen the haze in the Seoul metropolitan area, Gangwon, Chungcheong and North Jeolla provinces. Korea is currently trapped in a high-pressure system that causes pollutants to build up. China has ramped up factory production since the end of lockdown, which spells more pollution throughout this spring. The high-pressure system is expected to linger until early April, building up heat that traps the dust in the air. But there is a slight chance of rain in the middle of next week that may clear the air a little. Temperatures will continue to fluctuate from around five degrees Celsius in the morning to more than 20 degrees in the afternoon. Temperatures Plummet … [Read more...] about Fine Dust Pollution Thickens
‘What about these kids’ right to life?’ – Tributes for Nashvillle victims as gun control debate intensifies
The entrance to Covenant Christian school has become a focal point for a community's grief. Through the day, old and young, some in school uniform, gather to place flowers and stuffed toys at the school sign. They cry, embrace each other and wonder why this has happened here, in their affluent suburb of Nashville. There is anger, too, about America's gun laws. The shooter, Audrey Hale , was able to purchase seven guns legally from five local gun shops. Three of them, including two automatic rifles, were used in Monday's shooting. A popular refrain from the gun lobby is that the startling frequency of mass shootings in America is owing to a mental health epidemic. That argument holds little stock with Vidya Bansal, whose 10-year-old son Jai attends a nearby school. They have come to pay their respects to the victims. Arrest Gun-Loving Members of Congress—Not Grieving Fathers
Get more news and opinions in the twice-daily Beast Digest newsletter. Don’t miss the next big story, sign up here . Last Thursday, my wife Patricia and I attended a U.S. House of Representatives hearing on gun policies. We did not go there to be arrested, but after we were kicked out of a hearing on gun legislation, I ended up with my face pushed against the hallway floor, arms wrestled behind my back while a team of Capitol Police handcuffed me. (One Republican legislator likened us to the Jan. 6 insurrectionists.) After our son Joaquin was murdered in 2018— by a fellow student with an assault weapon while attending high school in Parkland, Florida —we founded a nonprofit, Change the Ref, to empower young people to fight for sane and safe gun policies. Since that time we have refused to be silent , particularly in the faces of the powerful, and it doesn’t matter whether they’re a Republican or a Democrat—they’ll hear our voices, as we demand to know why … [Read more...] about Arrest Gun-Loving Members of Congress—Not Grieving Fathers
Temple University President Resigns as Crime Grows Near Campus
The president of Temple University in Philadelphia resigned on Tuesday after a brief and tumultuous tenure plagued by worsening crime around campus, a strike by graduate students and a loss of confidence in his leadership among some faculty. Jason Wingard, who became the university’s first Black president in 2021, sent a statement to the campus community last week addressing concerns over campus safety and dwindling enrollment at Temple. His reassurances, however, proved futile as the chair of the university’s board of trustees, Mitchell Morgan, said in a statement on Tuesday that the board had accepted Mr. Wingard’s resignation. After briefly thanking Mr. Wingard for his service, Mr. Morgan wrote : “Given the urgent matters now facing the university, particularly campus safety, the board and the administration will ensure the highest level of focus on these serious issues.” Mr. Wingard and the board of trustees each did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment on … [Read more...] about Temple University President Resigns as Crime Grows Near Campus
Rand Paul: ‘I’m 100% Confident that Fauci Lied to Us’
Tuesday on Fox News Channel’s “Hannity,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) spoke on his latest evidence regarding the origins of COVID-19. According to Paul, evidence indicates that former National Institution of Allergy and Infectious Disease Dr. Anthony Fauci had lied about how the virus came to be. “I’m 100% confident that Fauci lied to us and that they were doing dangerous research there,” he said. “I would say all of the evidence I have seen so far points towards it coming from a lab. And it all adds together, and proximity makes a difference. The fact that the lab is within walking distance of where most of the coronaviruses of the world, the largest collection of coronaviruses in the world is within walking distance of where this started — yes, there’s too many coincidences to add up. But there is also evidence that this virus, COVID-19, is the product of something that was being developed and experimented upon. A group in Wuhan actually asked our Defense Department for money and said … [Read more...] about Rand Paul: ‘I’m 100% Confident that Fauci Lied to Us’
Daines: SF Fed Said ‘Financial Risks from Climate Change’ Were ‘Top of Mind’ Issue as Fed Hiked Rates Months Before SVB Collapse
On Tuesday’s broadcast of the Fox Business Network’s “Cavuto: Coast to Coast,” Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) criticized regulators at the San Francisco Federal Reserve for focusing on climate change and pointed out that the bank characterized “financial risks from climate change” as a “top of mind” concern back in October of 2022 . Daines said, “I’ll tell you, if you look at what happened in San Francisco, the San Francisco regulators were focused on climate change. In fact, when we went right to their website, they said, what’s ‘top of mind’ for our work in the 12th district, that’s the San Francisco district, this is back in October of last year. It said, ‘financial risks from climate change.’ They were asleep at the wheel. And Neil, you compare that to the Richmond district, that’s the fifth district of the Federal Reserve, they said rising rates and interest rates [are] what need to be focused on in terms of risk management. So, what you had here, is you had a woke San Francisco … [Read more...] about Daines: SF Fed Said ‘Financial Risks from Climate Change’ Were ‘Top of Mind’ Issue as Fed Hiked Rates Months Before SVB Collapse
Teacher Accused of Exchanging ‘Lewd’ Snapchat Messages with Students
A former Oklahoma high school teacher has been arrested for allegedly exchanging “lewd and indecent messages” with multiple students. A court document indicates Serena Cator was arrested on March 16 on three counts of soliciting sexual conduct or communication with a minor. Citing an arrest affidavit, KFOR reported Cator, a former teacher at McLoud High School, allegedly “admitted she has been sending and receiving lewd and indecent messages and pictures from several of her male students.” District officials reportedly first became aware of the allegations in September, leading to Cator being placed on administrative leave, per KFOR. FOX 25 reported the district turned over their information to police, leading to the criminal investigation. “We received the information from the school in November of 2022, so the investigation pretty much started then,” McLoud Police Chief Kyle Webb said. “It took a little while it was a pretty in-depth investigation, and … [Read more...] about Teacher Accused of Exchanging ‘Lewd’ Snapchat Messages with Students
Pizza Delivery Driver Awarded Medal for Rescuing 5 Children from Fire
An Indiana man who worked as a pizza delivery driver has been awarded a Carnegie Medal for rushing into a burning home to save five children inside. Nicholas Bostic, 25, spotted a house fire while driving around noon on July 11 in Lafayette, Indiana, WTHR reported . After parking, he reportedly yelled to warn any occupants that the house was on fire. He told the outlet that when did not hear a reply, he entered the home himself and discovered that four children were inside, leading the children to safety. “I went in through the back door and the second step of the staircase is when I saw the faces coming out and they ran past me. I followed behind and then at the back porch I asked them if there was anyone left in the house,” Bostic said. Upon learning another child, a six-year-old girl, had been left behind, Bostic “re-entered through the back door, ran up the stairs, and frantically searched the second-floor bedrooms as conditions deteriorated rapidly after an … [Read more...] about Pizza Delivery Driver Awarded Medal for Rescuing 5 Children from Fire
